Sorry if this has been posted before. I am considering moving to neotel. I currently use vodacom hsdpa and was wondering if it will be worth it.

I download a lot of torrents, will neotel be slower or the same as vodacom? What about the lag when playing online, will it be better?

Depends on your area. If you want to game you need a fixed line pal. or Wimax.

I stay in PTA North and the website says that I have excellent neoconnect prime coverage.

I have the Neotel " Unlimited " for now, been hving problems with it, when i first switched from the 5gig prime to unlimited, a few months ago, i was able to download about 48gigs via bit torrent, as of late, im lucky if i can download 10 gigs a month. Called in and asked them if there is a problem, getting a technician out tomorrow - will keep you up to date,
using Bit Torrent 6.1.2 currently @ 45kbps - download 2 files of total of 100gigs, i have auto redial if line is dropped and the notebook stays on 247. 3 months ago, was DL @ 300kbps?!? - some thing went wrong...........

I've got the neotel prime uncapped solution... for the first couple of weeks it wasn't going very well for me, but since then i've found if you download then make sure you download things that have a lot of seeders and usually don't go over a gig of size.

It's strange but whenever i download a 6gb file then the dl's crawl along at 2-6kb/s. Alternatively if i download for instance the latest BSG episode then itll dl at about 100kb/s.
Don't expect to get more than 100kb/s on most downloads.

My download speeds for torrents average 20-30kb/s.
For a few seconds I got up to 100kb/s.

Is there anyway to configure the Neotel Device or the Torrent app or both to get it to work faster?

Make sure incoming ports are open. With the neoconnect options incoming ports are closed by default. You need to give them a call to open the ports.

Well my downloads don't seem to be any better.
Do I have to tell them to open certain ports or to just open the ports?

And is that all that I need to do for my downloads to go faster or is there something else I am supposed to do?

Yes, only if your upload speeds were faster.
I have noticed on some torrent sites. They go according to your upload speeds, the faster you upload the faster you download.

After getting a new Device and ports opened again, I am averaging 20kb/s. :(
Same for me. Webpages load fast, downloads are slow. Definitely a lot slower than the HSDPA that I'm used to. I hate to say it but it stinks of shaping to me.

Okay, sorry to double post. I got my torrents to work great by setting up port forwarding on both protocols for the Bittorrent ports. My downloads run much better now, definitely no shaping going on. I am very happy with my service at this stage :)
