Neotel - What should I know?

So, Neotel is finally available in my area, with excellent coverage to boot.
I ordered it on Monday, so it should come today or tomorrow..

Anyway, just from what i've read here, i've seen many people are talking about ports being closed at first..

I mainly use rapidshare, no torrents etc..
Does rapidshare have its own port? I'm sorry if I sound like a noob, just not so down with the tech hax0rs.

Which ports should I request to be opened?

On a side note, I send Iburst a death threat email once a week, just to let them know how much I hate them.. so I will post my final letter to them here once I have my neotel installed.

Please provide any info on making this transition an easy one :)
 
Seems their coverage expande very recently in JHB!!

I now too have excellent coverage, where a week ago I had no coverage at all.
 
Yup that's what happened with me..
I was shocked!

I hope I don't get stuck with crappy speeds, like some other users on this forum :(
 
I think I will wait for an ethernet device in any case and then decide if I want to go with them. At the moment I am not sure if the 2.5GB package for R399 is better than getting a 384DSL line, which costs about R400 for 2GB (including analogue line, dsl line and 2GB data).

With the crappy speeds some people are getting, 384dsl might be better and has better latency?

Congrats on ordering Neotel :)

Yep most ports are closed by default but the usual ones like your mail, http are open.

I see RapidShare uses ports 80 and 8080 so you should be able to rip with no problems. Just double check those are the ports used as most of my googling has just shown me how to Crack RapidShare rather than what all the ports used are lol.

To download Torrents, you will need to call in and request your ports opened. Just check in your torrent client what port you use.
Call in when you get the device, ask for second level support if during the daytime, speak with the technician and say you wish to make a "trouble ticket" reason you would like to choose the ports that are opened, choose a port range or upto you.

Other than than.. I suggest you kit yourself well on the security side, the device is a modem not a router so no default firewall on incoming connections.

No argument here, but I use my phone for calls and the per second billing will more than half the amount of money spent - paying for 3 second cell phone calls at 1 minute chunks adds up.

What I do find is my pings are a quarter of what I was use too on DSL, but my average downloads are double.

Depends on what you want to use it for.

You means pings are 4 times higher/worse?

I will probably use it for browsing/youtube mostly and the odd game of Dota.
 
as soon as I get it i'll let you know about gaming..
I dont play fps, but i'll try it out on WoW..

Turns out you only get connected within 48 hours once your application has been approved, and I submitted my application on Monday, still not approved..
so looks like only next week.
