I've finally given up on ADSL. My line was never very stable but started becoming unbearable when I upgraded to 2 MB about a year ago. I worked out I live 2 km from one exchange but I'm on another exchange more than 5 km away. I managed to get the contact details of a Telkom ops manager who works in our area, and he looked into moving my line to the closer exchange. Not possible, apparently.

So today I'm scheduled to become Neotel's newest WiMAX customer. I sent through the application forms yesterday and within an hour they called me to book an installation for today. According to the test results the sales agent sent me I should have signal, but they'll do the feasibility test before they install. I'm going for the 2 MB option. From what I've read on these forums the solution is pretty fast and reliable. I'm optimistic.

Please do tell us how it goes! I wanted to order yesterday, but I had to give 3 months bank statements which I didn't have on me.

We have a 8mbps Neotel wimax as a backup and it works really well a lot better than the 4mbps ADSL we use - we generally get the full line speed and decent latency. ADSL better for gaming though.

depending of your area, you can get amobia, wifibre or kawuleza.

But Line of Sight is required. No LOS, No Connection.

I called Amobia when the Neotel guys (Ellies) left. They'll try to get here today, which would be good - I wouldn't want my afternoon off to be a complete waste. If I have LOS, I won't be SOL.

Possibly, but I have no idea how high I'd have to go. 5 metres above my chimney there was still no stable signal.
