I thought id just start a thread where everyone can talk about the much anticipated Neotel.

Many people are skeptical of the promises made by Neotel, and many believe it to be the second coming of Jesus in corporation form.

So lets here about your views and/or experiences thus far with the Second National Operator..

really, iv searched for one, can you point me to one, i can only find topics about various neotel news releases..

I suspect Neotel will become another Virgin. A lot of hype and no substance. I've noticed they have started to dig up the pavements and roads around Claremont, yet they are too stingey to tar the road again. So first impressions are poor. The first cost saving they will make is to customer service.

If I was an ISP or big/medium business I would be glad Neotel is here.
... but for individual consumer Vodacom is the company who will end up being competition for Telkom and not Neotel.

neotel might very well turn out to be a more business orientated service, especially since most residential customers would be to scared to move away from traditional fixed line..

ive noticed neotel have been putting lots of empty pipes in the ground, from my point of view thats not very promising, but seriously, how do they get the fiber into the pipes?

I doubt that they would just leave leave trench holes in the pavement.

actually i was pretty surprised to see how little effort they put into hiding there cables, they bury then more or less a metre under the ground, and in the areas that i hav seen them busy, they always leave there piping and other equipment on the site over night, dont look to bothered theft or sabotage..

until they release consumer products I give them a 0/10 and a huge imminent IBIWISI!!!!!!!

I don't want to be too skeptical, but by looking at iBurts's & Neotel's websites "comparing Oranges to Oranges" ? Well, let's hope not, *thumbs* "Whistle..Whistle.. ;)

At this stage I'm feeling a tad negative about this "vapourware" offering from Neotel - but also realizes that the government and DoC also have to take most of the blame.

I really do hope that things will go better for us broadband-wise from next year.

at the moment neotel has 1 pop in cape town, JHB and durban, in cape town the pop is in durbanville, so how will they manage to supply areas like rondebosch or tableview with cdma, or wimax, dont they still need to put up antennae stations? and if you want to use ethernet, how will it reach your house?

Who knows? I wouldn't hold my breath & hope at this stage. All I can say :D

Personally I don't think we will ever have competition until LLU.

Problem is fixed line isn't very profitable as far as I know. I don't trust the government here but let's say I did, I would have preferred that everything from the exchange down to the local DB be managed by a private non-profit company owned by government (and partially subsidized by the tax payers if needed). Although we all know that service will go down the drain to the levels commonly experienced by many of the government departments in SA.

STOP DOUBTING IMMEDIATELY:eek:

The holes took about 2 days to dig (no machines allowed). They dug into the water pipes while they were at it. They left it uncovered without marking for another 2 days, then they covered most of it with sand an lumps of rock. It remains like that. The rain has removed most of the sand and they now resemble trenches. The tape markers blew away, so the holes were just exposed.

The rocks have migrated to middle of the road and it's quite a spectacle to see an expensive BMW hit one of these rocks or holes at 60kph!

LLU is crucial for changes to happen... until thats in place no point in getting excited.. Telkom did say give us till 2011 to complete LLU - Whoopy - maybe ill go overseen for a few years then come back in hopes for better broadband... sigh
