Nepalese officials say the government plans to minimize the congestion of climbers near the 8,850-meter (29,035-foot) summit of Mount Everest, which is clogged with scores of climbers during the short window of good weather.
Tourism ministry official Mohan Krishna Sapkota said Monday that the government is working with expedition operators to ease the traffic jam near the summit.
Sapkota says separate ropes will be fixed for climbers ascending and descending near the summit this year to help the flow of climbers, and government officials posted at the base camp would strictly monitor climbers throughout the spring climbing season, which runs from March to May.
The move follows years of criticism that Nepal has done little to manage the growing number of Everest climbers despite making millions of dollars in fees.
