NERF!!!

I believe I had read a blue post some time after Cata was originally released, who stated that skill makes a difference, they can see those with the most skill need less time to achieve more than the rest, but some of them still put in a lot of time to get world 1sts.

Now if Blizzard can state that, who are you to say skill doesn't count...

Just for clarity, what "skill" is involved to follow a youtube video or follow a strategy that have been analysed to death on mmochampion? In my opinion 80% of the time, to make progress you need to ensure no one in your raid is doing something stupid. Is it really skill to follow a strategy to perfection, or is it practice and repetition?
If you run blind into every fight, no addons, and figure the fight out and beat it on your own, that is what I call skill.
You are required to know your character inside and out, but even for that there is detailed guides. Is that skill? There is no excuse for anyone (part from bad gear) to not perform at the maximum potential of their characters. Unless they cannot follow instructions.
Or is this "skill" we are referring to, to be able to multitask? Able to focus on a 5min boss fight? Know when to move out of "stuff" on the ground?

Btw. I know some people takes longer than others to learn strategies. But once they know it, it is all easy. Can "skill" therefore be learned?

Its a skill to learn quicker than others. IE strategies.
Its a skill to notice stuff on the group and avoid it better than others
Its a skill to be aware of all things around you better than others
Its a skill to react faster than others
Its a skill to be more coordinated than others
Its a skill to play your character to its full potential. 2 people with the same gear does not always do the same DPS, same healing etc. Simply because they are better and more skilled that the rest.
etc. etc.

Its the same with other games... CS, Quake, BF, Dota etc etc. Why do some people get more kills than others? Because they play more? Or because they are actually better and more skilled?
Yes you get better the more you play a game (well most ppl anyway), but everyone has a skill cap. We've all seen people who pick up a game and well just seem incredibly good at it compared to others who've been playing a game for ages and still sux.

Same goes for real life. Different people are just better at different things and that you can account to many factors. There is this little thing called a persons IQ that seem to play a big roll. Similarly some things just seems to be in peoples genes and its like they were born for something.
We are all different and not just in how we look... We just simple cannot all do things exactly as well as everyone else.

If some of the above is not true then by your reasoning everyone on earth can do anything just as well as the next person given they spend enough time on it, or should it be 'when they've spend the same amount of time on it', given that the ability to learn something faster than others is a skill in itself?

Hmmm I must say, I am going with Snow on this one. I hardly think someone that watches the Heroic Ragnaros video will kill him (even if he watches the video 300 times... wont help). To multitask at those levels to which some of the top world guilds perform at...

I have seen first hand how some guilds with inferior gear dish out stupid amounts of raid dps, yet you keep hearing from people on the forums how ez mode their class is to play. Until you have swimmed with the big boys, your dps is ****e... seriously. When you think you are pro in your guild, join a more hardcore guild, your eyes will open when you drop to the bottom of the list. Have a look at some of the posted logs of some of the high end guilds.

Raid awareness, high movement encounters and still being able to keep a certain level of dps... there is definately a skill level involved. In all fairness, blizzard has dumbed down a lot of the "thinking" element in individual performance... in the old days you could tamper with stats like ArP and adjust your rotations / playstyle accordingly to ensure you benefit from your specific build eg. Switching to full physical damage rotations vs. Using spell damage shots as a hunter. Its a lot easier today, but there is still a skill element at play imo.

Same with healing... your best healers are the ones that can anticipate massive bursts of incoming damage and be prepared for it...

Ofc, I believe in skill ;) Or rather people can have too little of it... It is just a very interesting topic, and I like to see how philosophical people can get about it.

I PVP quite a lot, and no matter how hard I try, I simply will never be as good as some of the others out there. I can ascribe it to having bad latency etc, but at the end of the day, they simply have more skill than me. There is no guide out there to read your opponent in PVP, its all your skills vs your opponent's skills.

In PVE it is dumbed down quite a bit, but there is still a lot of skills enveloped (Snow, you described them adequately). But would it not be "true" skills if bosses were scripted with better AI? Now you know exactly (thanks to timers) when things will happen and you can control the fight to some extend. But if the timers were random, and the bosses did not progress through set phases? How many people would be able to complete this?
Some time back I tested some stuff on a private server, where all bosses were tank and spank because the bliz boss scripts were too complicated to copy. Even on these fights I saw people wipe on bosses. Some people are just clueless, but does that mean the others have skill? Or is it just a relevant term?

@Kaine lol :)

@werries2 according to the definition the others have more skill than the clueless ones. Skill is not one thing. It comes in many forms and shapes :)

@Pornolio Raggy 25 HC was and still is quite a fight!!

This thread has turned in many directions. I never really said the nerf @ this point and time in tier is bad or good. For some its bad (thou I recon they are the minority, which I guess I am part of), but for the masses and Blizzards it's probably a good thing.
But I do understand why Blizz did it and tbh I can't really blame them much. They work with a business model and make decisions, good or bad, according to that.
