We have a .NET application that uses .NET Remoting from the client application to connect to the server application which is hosted in a Windows service on the server. This application is working at various clients, even over the internet with clients connecting from different countries and we have no issues. We sometimes get other issues related to firewall or security, but those are usually different errors. We never get this error... until now.

We have one client where the software is hosted on their server and the client computers can connect to the server except for one of their branches / sites. They've set up 3 thin clients and all three at that site come back with this error. The IT person says that the firewall ports are open and that he can ping and telnet to the server from those clients without any issue so I'm running out of ideas.

Any suggestions as to what can be the cause?

What I can also say is that every time a call is made to the server, there is a Logon and Logoff audit entry in the security log of the server for that user. However, in the case of these clients, nothing.

Sounds like a network issues. Could also be a proxy setting that is causing this. I'm sure the networking guys here would help.
