I'm living in Hartz Valley, in Hartzenbergfontein (just south of Jo'burg) which is basically a hole in the ground. A very nice one, but still a hole, in that there's no Telkom service (neither wired nor wireless) and no 3G from any of the major providers. I'm trying to make do with a cellphone and with GPRS, which is better than nothing, but not easy.

I've been in contact with a company named Net1 (www.netone.co.za) that offers wireless broadband internet and VOIP across their own wireless infrastructure. VOIP is optional and takes the form of separate box with a phone number, and your router plugged into one end and a standard phone into the other. They have a tower on a high site very close by, with almost line-of-sight (just a few trees in the way) to my house.

What I'd get (so their sales rep tells me) is a 1MBit/s wireless channel with a maximum contention factor of 20. Which could be worse, and at least they're honest about it, rather than just selling it as "1Mbit/s of bandwidth" or some such.

Does anyone has any experience with this company, their network, and their performance?

All feedback would be greatly appreciated!
