Hey Guys,

My brother has a R2100 game voucher and wants to buy himself a netbook. So far he has mentioned:

Samsung N130
LG X130-L

I think the only difference is that one has Windows 7 Starter and the other XP and also the HDD space.

I have read the other threads... Does anyone know if it is easy to add more ram to them, I know you will have to remove the current 1GB stick.

Also HDD upgrade?
Will the warranty be voided?

Is it easy/cheap/recommended to get the 3G card from them? He wants to use his phone to connect to the internet, but it doesn't have 3G.

Like I said, he will only access the internet and email, maybe other small tasks. Can you watch movies on them? :)

Do you guys think it is really worth it to go for the higher res screen for the stuff he wants to do?

Budget ends at R3500.

Here is the link for the LG - http://rapidcat.epages.net/mdd/game/rsa/pages/page-10.jpg

I've been playing around on the Samsung one, seems okay and it has vga output so screen size isn't really an issue. HD is 120GB so to upgrade I wouldn't really bother and he can use external drives. tbo I don't like their tech support but maybe that was just an isolated incident I had with Samsung.

The LG i can't comment on.

On the whole I wouldn't recommend any netbook at all no matter what brand.

The thing is, the next option is a normal laptop @ R1k more and then it is a celeron, which I hate.

There was some reputable poll results (forget where) saying that Netbooks have 20% higher failure rate to laptops.
So yeah, save your money and get something decent is my advice.
Looking closer at this samsung it's build quality is pretty swak imho but you can at least access the memory quite easily.

I hear what you say, but all my brother is going to do is facebook and emails. Sure it's not worth it going for a normal laptop?

@Drake: I have a Samsung NC10 and I'm pretty impressed by the build quality. For transportability, weight and battery life it beats a notebook hands down. Also, the keyboard beats that of a cellphone...

@Sharkbait: For 3G connectivity, buy a modem to connect to the Internet - the K3565 is now around R500 and you can still buy SIM cards for under R5.

Okay, so now I have a lady that is also looking for a netbook and she has only one requirement, it must be pink. I have checked Nivo's site and all the pink ones are 10.1" screen. She will be using this netbook at work, so email, internet, word and excel.

Any recommendations?

Yeah, I showed those to her. She likes the light pink one of Asus. Specs are not that good and she knows it, so no complaining afterwards. ;)

Then it will be your fault ;)

Sell her the Dell Studio then. She never gave you a budget :p
