Anybody know of places to get a netbook for cheap in the UK? Maybe Asus EEE 1000H or something similar. Online or actual physical stores would be great. I had a poke around on the net, and i dont really see any great bargins.

If you can help, will be really appreciated. Thanks

Unfortunately the UK no longer has a guaranteed price advantage over us here in SA, and of course their VAT is higher than ours. I found last month that even Incredible Deception offered better prices on a netbook I wanted than the UK!

Where you should definitely NOT buy is from the leading high-street and online operators like PCWorld and Currys/Dixons.

If you are physically heading to the UK and will be buying over the counter, several centres have the equivalent of our Cash Converters but with the difference that in addition to secondhand goods, they also have excellent bargains in closeout stock they may have bought in. For example, last month in the Maidstone (Kent) pedestrian mall I bought a sealed, brand-new SanDisk 16GB flash drive for just GBP 16, or around R210.

Not sure if they have a website, but for absolute rock-bottom deals you can try the fortnightly magazine MicroMart, only usually available from larger newsagents -- they always have cheap deals from smaller retailers and online traders. And in London there's Morgans (they also have a website you could Google) who do cheap closeout stock if you don't mind buying something six months or more behind the times.

thanks mate, useful information there

do you guys reckon its better to get a machine from the US instead?

how exactly do you 'bypass' customs?

ROFL I wouldn't know.
I won't buy major hardware oversea's because of the warranty issue.
But some people get their items wrapped & labelled as gifts so customs doesn't bother etc... I've never done it myself so I honestly can't say.

Just know that if your item does get picked up, you'll end up paying similar to what you'd pay locally with the import taxes and not have the peace of mind of a local warranty.

Plus you always risk having your item arrive in more than one piece ;)

Not to mention I purchased a titanium ring from WantItAll which got stuck in customs for over 3 weeks...

Places I use are Amazon, Microdirect.co.uk, Dabs.co.uk and insight.com (select UK from country selector). I paid around £300 for my NC10 when it first came out.
