I wanted something very portable to take with me when I go on holiday, or just need some computing out of the house.

So, I thought hmmmm these netbooks look like they can do the job. Knowing full well that it will frustrate me if I can't do everything I want, the linux jobbies were out. So, then onto the windows ones.

I don't know how fast/powerful these Atom processors are, but I assume they're not great. I was looking at spending about 6k on one of these nifty Acer Netbooks, with the built in 3g etc.

But then I came accross the Acer Timeline 3810t. It's got a Core Solo 1.4Ghz Processor, (now) 3Gb of DDR3 Ram, 250GB HDD and a 13.3" screen. The laptop is macbook air thin in most places, with a bit of a wedge shape and comes loaded with Vista Home Premium (and the upgrade program to Win 7 once released).

Internet reviews and specs indicate it can also get 8hrs + of battery life. It's light, ultra-portable and even has a full sized keyboard. The only downside is it lacks an optical drive, but I can always get an external!

It was cheapish at R6999 from incredible corruption, and they threw in a free case as well which was quite nice. Notebook for very near netbook money. I know it's not the most powerful of the lot, but it has decent enough processor speeds for internet, email, office and itunes and it's the kind of thing I can comfortably use on an airplane.

I get frustrated with my Atom 1.6ghz - and I think the Acer netbook you looked at had a 1.33ghz.

With a 13.3" screen - how close is it in size and weight to a netbook?

It's not Netbook size, especially when comparing to the 8.9" things...but it's definately ultra-portable. It's thin and light as anything. I would say the size of a 288 page counterbook, but wedged so it feels smaller.

I got a really nifty bag/sleeve with it - so it's easy as anything to carry with.

I guess my fear with a netbook was limitations. Even with the Core2 Solo, the Acer seems pretty decent.

An Atom 1.6 may be a bit slow, I have a 1.86 GHz Atom netbook with a 64GB SSD and Win XP Pro and it is very fast to run OpenOffice, play H264 video - can even do 720p H.264 video and use Explorer/FireFox.

At the end of the day it depends but for me the 1.86 GHz Atom with a decent SSD is very fast (and of course XP Pro/Home).

For portability and power you will need a Core 2 Duo, ULV processor. However a 1.86 or 2.00 GHz Atom is plenty fast if partnered with an SSD. You do however pay for these features and to be honest everyone I show my NEC VersaPro UltraLite to just loves it for its light weight and excellent build.

I saw something like this at IC Woodmead a month or so ago - 13.3" screen, 160GB hdd and 1GB ram for a clearance price of R2999... was tempted to buy it myself! Went back a few days later - it was gone of course!

But seriously - 13.3" is the best portable size - 12" and down is just too small!

(Even my HP 2510p is not the greatest - anybody want to trade for something bigger?) heh-heh - thread hijack ftw!

I got myself the Aspire A110 @ R1999 and ran Ubuntu Netbook Remix. Because of the slow SSD write speeds system response, especially when browsing, were slow so I upgraded the RAM to 1.5GB and replaced the 8GB SSD with a 60GB HDD. I am now running Win7 RC with great success. Very responsive and excellent boot time (32 secs from pressing the ON button till desktop completely loaded). This all set me back R2600, but if you have a bigger budget than I had, buy one already running a HDD and Windows.

hi Dolby,

what is it about this netbook that is causing you frustration? What operating system/applications do you have running on it?

Cheers
