I got a netbook for Xmas in 2008 and I have to say the usefulness of the device is still astounding me this far into the New Year. I have an Acer Aspire One and have to honestly say that having a netbook around is pure bliss. The obvious point of pleasure would be true mobility. I sometimes need to configure networking gear at client premises and using a netbook is much quicker and easier than lugging a bulky standard notebook around. A netbook can easily be half the size of a conventional mid price laptop and won’t have nearly the processing power either, but don’t be affronted by the statement. I am still discovering how far I can push my device currently running Windows XP home.
The little Atom processor inside my netbook (and most other competing netbooks) has a little heart of gold and is strong enough to take a severe beating smiling. I had no issues playing the classic strategy game Age of Empires 2 – Conquerors on it the other day. There are sites online that will give you listings of tested games on various netbooks and most entrants into the netbook user market will be surprised to find out just how many games will work on them. Cool games at that! You can run Open Office, Microsoft Office or nearly any office suite you can think of on most of them. They are made to be mobile and if HSDPA isn’t built in standard it can be added no problem. At least a good netbook will be able to. Apart from the software and desktop computer-like agility of some netbooks there are the more obvious advantages that all of them share. You can lie on your couch much easier with a netbook than with a notebook. It is small enough to hold in one hand and type with the other. Clicking around on the web has never been this easy! Who needs an e-book device when you have a netbook around? I mean, come on, seriously!
You can even make a long visit to the bathroom more interesting with a netbook as long as you can keep it dry. I would not recommend risking these devices in a foam bath, but hey people do funny things. Movies on my particular netbook are easy to watch even if the Linpus operating system is not so DivX friendly as it could have been. Most netbooks have widescreen formatted screens, which is a bonus when lying in bed. Having the netbook on your chest in bed is like reclining in a cinema. The screen will be relatively the same size if not bigger, perspective wise of course, and nobody will be able to walk between you and the action when you are watching movies in bed, depending on whether you have children or not.
Netbooks like to go places other mobile computers don’t go so easily. Netbooks honestly can fit in most ladies handbags or small backpacks. Mine slides into a pouch and into my backpack in just a few seconds and the sturdy design makes you quickly realize that it can take a punch as well. You don’t have to be overly gentle with netbooks as their smaller form factor gives them strength you would easily come to underestimate because of their cuteness factor.
Office presentations should not be an issue with the average netbook and carrying large volumes of data can easily be done using a netbook with a decent sized hard drive. Skype and such is a breeze and with a built in webcam and microphone (should you get a netbook with them built in) will make those chats with overseas friends much more interesting. There is nothing like being taken on a visual tour of some remote spot on earth in real time over the web. I have seen things ranging from Austrian farmland to french office cubicles this way and it never gets boring! You being mobile like this will add a similar bonus to the Skype pleasure of your contacts. If you have some spare cash, do yourself a favor and get a nice little netbook as an early birthday present to yourself. It really adds another dimension to your computing experience a heavier machine really cannot.
