There is this whole range of "sub-notebooks" called netbooks that are hitting the market from various suppliers.

I would like to get everyone's opinion to wether they see the Macbook Air fitting in this range? I mean it is still the lightest notebook to date, unfortunately it is not the smallest... Some of these netbooks have 10'' and even 8'' displays.

Do you think Apple should enter this Market? I mean if the Macbook Air is purely an administrative machine (Word, Excel, Internet, Email) surely Apple could make an even smaller machine that would appeal to this interesting netbook market.

I don't see Apple going into this market. The whole thing is that these devices are cheaper, secondary laptops. The Apple premium would put the pricing in mainstream laptop territory. Add to the fact that the Atom processor, used in Netbooks, can run OSX just not that well. I think it would be a negative for Apple as they would have new users associating a slow, painful OSX experience with Apple products in general.

Strategically it makes no sense for them to dilute their "premium" brand. That said, Apple has surprised me many time and I wouldn't be shocked to see this.

although not made by apple, there are rumours of a sub-note in development powered by iPhone hardware... For simple email excel and word I think this could be really cool. An iPhone with a bigger display and keyboard. Built in 3G wifi and a 32Gb ssd..

Rewind, you make a valid point, but Apple have gone and developed an type of OS that can run seamlessly on the iPhone.

What I am thinking of is some of the rumors that were amuk not to long ago, a touch screen mini notebook. Basically an oversized iPhone that's purpose is dedicated for administration.

I think Apple could pull it off while still keeping it's "Premium Brand" Status.

Cybermoo, you make a good point about the OS buuuuut:

It would need to be different from the current Netbooks and provide something totally new rather than the generic 1.6ghz Atom chip with a gig or ram and a ten inch screen. An iPhone tablet sounds awesome though.

I don't want a sub notebook. I want a real notebook, but small one. And I'm willing to pay for it. Something like the Sony TZ series. That's a notebook starting at ÂŁ1500. It's not cheap, but it's small, it's fully featured, and it's small and light. One of my colleagues have one of the older ones (Core Solo). It has everything, including a built-in DVDRW and high-res screen.

Specs of the current series are here.

Jobs on Mac Netbooks: Not Yet, But...

Steve Jobs was present at today's financial results conference call and answered questions during the Q&A session.

One interesting topic that came up was questions about Apple's interest in the low-cost netbook category of platform. Jobs made it clear that Apple chooses not to target the low-cost notebook market and believes it is a nascent category that will evolve.

Most interesting, however, was that Jobs hinted that if the category does evolve, Apple has "some pretty interesting ideas" about it. Jobs makes it clear that Apple is not going to be competing in this market at this time.

Now thats what I am talking about!!!!

Sexy!?! Thats friggen awesome!

I would buy one depending on its stats etc...

That's a pretty stupid idea. The touch interface is one thing on a small device like the iPod Touch or iPhone, but can you imagine actually trying to work on this thing? If you want to type, you can angle the screen so you can actually read it. There's also no feeling to the "keyboard" - silly.

If they make a proper notebook of that size, you know with a screen and keyboard that don't share the same surface, that would be awesome.

Just imagine the possibilities tho!

If Apple incorporate bluetooth into the device you can use Apple's wireless keyboard and mouse, when you are off into a boardroom meeting or like me in Sales and on the move allot, having such a portable machine is perfect...
