I use Getflix but my Dad is coming for a visit and I'm thinking of preloading everything I might need on an old laptop and asking him to take it back to the states with him... would that work?

You'd need a VPN.
Netflix stopped blindly serving from their CDN if their auth system had passed the request. Now it needs to be a full proxy as they check the origin of the stream request matches the auth.
