Hi,

I've done some searching, but since this is probably a little less mainstream I need some advice on hardware.

Current setup:
LG 32" (non Smart TV) with HDMI inputs
Med8er 250X (smallish laptop drive) no Wifi or LAN connection
LG BlueRay Player
DSTV Explora on Compact sub
10Mbps Telkom Fibre on 100GB cap

I've been ready to ditch the DSTV since forevere we don't watch much on it aside from the kids watching 302 occasionally. No sport, but my wife will occasionally watch some cooking shows.

Without spending cash on a dedicated player like the Roku, how easy / difficult would it be to setup a spare pc (currently Win 10 Pro OS) on the LAN with a MS Remote (I have the card and Remote already) output to one of the HDMI ports on the TV? Messed around with XBMC long time ago. Streaming would probably Netflix via Unotelly or direct since they are in SA now.

The reasoning is simply that I can ditch the Med8er and use a spare 1TB drive on this new player with all the converted DVD's and play them from there as well as the streaming services.

Considering that tech "un" savvy family members need to use it. Comments?

I use an Android set-top box (DroidTV MXIII) with a Bluetooth keyboard. Lets you use any Android app, including all the streaming ones, and the keyboard lets you search very fast.

Roku is a good bet too. I would advise against a cheap non-box setup, as the user interface usually sucks.

Netflix has loads of kids content. Your family should be fine without DSTV.

Surely your BluRay player has a Netflix app?

That would probably be the quickest and cheapest method. Unfortunately not all LG BR devices support Netflix. It would depend on the model. A firmware upgrade may help in some circumstances. OP would have to post model number to be sure.

Well there's an interesting option.. I will have to check. The BluRay player is about 2 years old, I think, and not sure that it has any other connections than the HDMI output and not in use much since all the DVD/ BluRay discs were converted to mp4 (kids and physical discs don't mix well). Aside from that I don't have a remote for it and use the LG TV remote with its limited DVD player buttons. We were relieved of a TV and and all the remotes during a unscheduled night time redistribution of wealth excersise. They missed the BluRay player because it was way back in the cabinet.

Connect your Win 10 PC to your LG 32"
Go to website and stream *max window* Prob solved!
