Hi Guys

Who is experiencing low quality streaming from Netflix in the evenings?

My line was running full speed, but Netflix streaming was maxing out at 384SD at best. This makes it unwatchable.

On Vox. 10Mbps line.

During the day it will hit 720HD and even 1080 at times.

Please post your experience here, times your streaming is below par, line speed, and your ISP.

Need to determine if it is a ISP issue, or a Netflix issue.

I tested some torrents in this same time period, and they were flying, Youtube was also perfect with no buffering at 720p.

What were you streaming via? I find that the app on my Samsung TV is very wonky - sometimes it works fine, sometimes it just won't go past as you say 384. I get really bad quality even though my line is free, yet if I test it out on PC the quality is perfect. Have you tried streaming from another app or device?

I stream via my WD TV live, wired connection. My issue is mostly in the evenings, when I really want to sit and relax and watch a show.

I've never had any issues streaming Netflix - once in a while the initial buffering will take a bit of time - but other than that it has been solid.

Various ISPs offer free 1GB test accounts. You can simply fire one of these up to test, and rule out your ISP or not.

Whatever your issue is, it's unique to you/your ISP.

No, I'm not going back to MWEB. :)

MWEB do not offer free 1GB test accounts. While they are the best ISP IMO, zero reference to them was made.

My point stands. You have free tools at your disposal to put a nail in the coffin.

Streaming fine on telkom 10mb uncapped - I limit it to 720p and it quickly ramps up to that resolution. I'm having problems with a few other roku channels at times - namely CNN and Lifetime - but its probably due to my missus and kids both streaming Lifetime at the same time.

How are your ping OP when this happens? I found that, specific to my area at least, there is lots of congestion in the evenings and streaming suffers. When there is nothing I hit 1080p on my 5.1Meg sync.

Ping was 26ms and download 7.57Mbps.

OP or some of the other users might be able to deduce a few things about how Hulu works from the error message (Below) I received in my browser window tonight

(I am casting Hulu and Netflix to a Chromecast ver 1 attached to my TV from a Chrome window on my laptop using Zenmate Premium, which sometimes works and sometimes hits me with the dreaded "only to be shown in the USA" or "we detect you are using a VPN proxy from another country" Blackscreen messages.
When Zenmate fails to work, I try tvunblock's 2nd DNS 192.241.137.65 or JSheed's DNS 154.127.60.71 in my router's settings.)

Here is the Hulu error message for those who would like to do some detective work (space is my username - I have no idea who the alfred is that the message is referring to):

Hmm, interesting. Had a long chat with Netflix support. If you are not getting HD, go into Netflix, then using the remote do the following

UP UP, DOWN DOWN, LEFT RIGHT, LEFT RIGHT, UP UP, UP UP. This will ask you to log out. LOg out, log back in and restart the same show. Make sure your account is set to HD playback though.

Worked for me. Couldnt get better than 384sd, did this and it went 240 - 384 - 720 HD.
