Netflix vs DStv - Experts predict the winner

I think everybody in these dicussions seem to ignore the one trump card that Dstv has: Afrikaans speaking
South Africans of all races that watch Kyknet channels with some excellent programmes.
Are there any statistics available?

No mention of Showmax? I know the parent owner says that Showmax and DSTV are separate entities, but I wouldn't be surprised if Showmax would get rebranded to something DSTV-like with more latest content (movies/series etc.) in the future.

I think DSTV, should create new packages:
1) Full streaming package (including sports) Around R350 to R400 a month
2) Sports only streaming package (R200 max a month)
3) Full Package (no Sport) R200 to R300 per month
4 Same packages using the existing decoders just add R150

What do you guys think of the above? Pricing could be wrong but you get the idea!

We downgraded from Premium (R809pm) to Compact (R385pm) and we upgrade for a month or so when the Super Rugby is on - it costs an extra R400 to upgrade for a month, but it's only for a month or two and then back down to R385 (until the next price increase in April, of course). Otherwise we are quite happy with Compact - as we don't watch movies or series, only News/Business/BBC and doccies.

Not even Sky sports can do that, How is Supersport meant to.

If there's an international appetite for South African content, you can be sure Netflix will seriously think about investing. They've had success with marketing locally-produced content to international audiences (Dark (Germany), Fauda (Israel), Le Casa de Papel (Spain), Suburra (Italy) etc.).

Monochoice must be really worried about Netflix seeing as they tried (are trying) to get them regulated in Africa. (I'll try and find the source)

Considering Neflix have been investing in Nollywood, I see no reason for them not to invest in SA's local content if there is a demand.

Nollywood is a sobriquet that originally referred to the Nigerian film industry. The origin of the term dates back to early 2000s, traced to an article in The New York Times.

I think hubby just watches the finals...it was 2 months last year. We also have very accommodating friends and family with Premium during the other months!

Competition to Netflix is only going to increase - Disney are coming, Apple probably sometime this year, AT&T (after buying Time Warner).

In the end, I can't see how all those subscriptions don't end up being as unattractive as DSTV.

DSTV has the sport, so it will win.

Not for long. Amazon is already making inroads into sporting rights in the us. Just a matter of time before it starts happening here.
