Hi guys,

My netgear modem reports : 320kbps downstream, 192kbps upstream
I've had my ADSL line now for officially 4 hours 30 minutes and am thinking of upgrading to 384k or even 512k

With what my modem reports though, it looks like I will never get above 320kbps. Is it worth upgrading?

Btw, to the folks thats wondering about getting ADSL or iBurst or even Sentech. ADSL kicks everyone squarely in the nuts. 192k ADSL is much faster than 1 meg iBurst EVER could be. Don't know if it's because I'm with UUNET and not SAIX, but I guess SAIX would even be faster. </end sales pitch/rant>

DownStream Connection Speed 320 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 192 kbps

mine reports the same and my line was recently downgraded from 384->192. definately was 384+, 40K/s+ dl speeds compared to my now 19K/s :(

Jeez noone you talk a load of cr*p sometimes.
If anyone is really interested in comparing adsl and iburst a good place to start is here.

Noone why dont you post a speed test so we can all have a good laugh.

Daveogg, being a wireless user from more than 16 months now, I can tell you one thing, ADSL (even the "crappy speed of 192") beats them hands down.

I don't talk crap. I preach brutha.
#1 my ADSL didn't go down at all since I got it (more than I could say from the wireless guys)
#2 Pings are stable (more than I can say from the wireless guys)
#3 Speed is stable, i get what I pay for and my speed is NEVER crap. And trust me, in 12 hours I can tell you this because wireless companies NEVER gave me SOLID speed for 12 long hours like ADSL has.
#4 packet loss is 0%, unlike the 85%+ packet loss I usually received in the last 2 weeks (and I have LOS of 3 WBS towers and live less than 2km away from one)

Now before you go spewing crap. I don't care about speed. (which, btw, is much faster than wireless at this stage, like i said, even on 192k)

And you know what? I can upgrade to faster speeds if I want to. 1meg ADSL being released in August, you won't have a leg to stand on if you try and argue how great iBurst is.

noone dont you read the forums dude UUNET are slow why on earth you signed i dont know

go get an axxess or allyoucaneat account it may be saix but you complaining about speed do something about it and why 192 not 384 not much price diff for double the speed

i would suggest allyoucan.co.za 580 for 30 gigs never a single problem and there support is very fast and clued up

and axxess ive heard 599 for 30 gigs also very good leave UUNET alone

killadoob,

(here goes a point form again)

#1 They're not slow
#2 I didn't sign anything, it's month to month, unlike Axxess and AYCE
#3 I never complained about speed

The reason why I chose 192k instead of 384k is because an upgrade is free (downgrade has a price attached to it) and because I currently pay for both the ADSL and iBurst, I figured it would be more cost effective for me (especially seeing that the first month is rife with installation costs etc)

So, I'm going to dump iBurst, and when I do, I'll upgrade my ADSL. When I do, I don't have to worry about being capped, because I have an uncapped account.

Take into reasoning that I don't p2p at all. So the product does it for me (plus, for VPN purposes, the ping times are really good internationally)

I have to say, UUNET does give the best international pings for anything if you are on adsl now, they even beat SAIX unshaped hands down...especially in games, its just I had enough of them, why I am not with them anymore...

Just a quick correction, Axxess is also month to month - no contract involved.

Sorry, but when I went to their site in the beginning, I found it had a 6 month contract attached to it.

Daveogg, iburst is such a crap!!!

I don't know why you are defending them! I don't give a sh*t about the theoretical speed, they are f*ckin unreliable, slow most of the time, and their packet shapping makes it ABSOLUTELY useless for anything but web browsing (when the pages don't timeout of course).

The only pain with ADSL IMO is until one get it install it! With iBurst is the oposite! You are up and running in 5 minutes and then you are screwed for months or years, with ADSL you wait month or two and then you go! Fast and reliable!

iBurst is only for people that cannot get ADSL for some reason. I just cancelled mine after I realised that important fact! If you can get ADSL, don't bother with iBurst at all!
