Hi there,

just got my new router after the previous one was struck by lightning.

My Laptop picks up the new NEtgear network and connects perfectly to it.

BUT, when I put the address of the router in my browser, I cannot seem to make contact with the router. I get a message that the page is under construction.

I have not connected my Laptop via a network cable to my router. Is this absolutely necessary to connect to the router to setup my ADSL username & password?

With my D-Link router it was not necessary to do so?

I managed. My network cable was still plugged into my Laptop. Everything is working fine now.

Hi there,

thanx for all the replies.

1. I cannot connect to the internet. My username and everything is 100%. When adding my details in the setup of the router, ie my username & password for my ADSL, I reboot the rooter.

With this being done, I cannot connect to the internet. The rest of the settings I left to default, just to get on the net.

2. I have downloaded the firmware as you have suggested. When hitting the upload button, I get a message after a few seconds that the file contains no data. I really will appreciate any help.

Is there not some Netgear support in SA I can phone?

DeonH, the only support option for you is http://www.duxbury.co.za/ who distrubutes these crap modems. Dont even try getting support from their international site. The duxbury okes are not bad, they should be able to sort you out ...
 
Leaving it on it's default settings ... obviously it will not connect.

PPPoE
VCI 35
VPI 8

Setup the DNS as per your ISP.
 
Netgear are not crap. I really like my Netgear router.

Anyway - DeonH - check the Advanced Settings on the router. The local ADSL uses some settings that are different to how the routers ship.

You should see 3 options:

Multiplexing Method (VC-Based or LLC-Based) - set that to LLC-Based
VPI = 8
VCI = 35

Also, make sure you are using PPPoE as the authentication method in the Basic Settings.

LLC-based option was the one that got me when I first got my router - i think its VC-based by default?

I think these settings should be correct. Which ISP are you with? They can give you the right info if this doesn't work.

The encapsulation should have been PPPoE and not PPoA ...

Now I like my router again!

Reviewing all the Threads the Netgear 834 seems the router to go for, when I go ADSL. One question. Is it possible to config profiles, enabling the blocking of P2P ports and then opening up the last couple of days before Cap Rnewal (Month end etc). I want to do this to stop "others" on my Lan abusing link and thereby preserving CAP till month end when CAP renewed
 
Toby - Yes, I did exactly that. Create a "deny always" Outgoing Rule for the ports, then enable it when you need to. Simple enough. You could also set it to apply to everyone except you.
