I know this information has been posted before but it's wrong for the current Netgear offering. Apparently this particular router is becoming more popular again so here's how to set it up for PPPoE dialups.

Simply navigate to:

http://your.own.router.ip/setup.cgi?next_file=mode.htm

Setting the router to "modem only" will allow dial-up but alas stops it functioning as a router

If anyone information on how to keep both of these functions, please give me a shout! :)

isnt there a setting for "modem+router" ?
Im not sure on the DG834 but on the DG834GT, it has "modem only" and "modem+router"
I doubt both of em will have same settings.
oh and by following the link that AntiThesis just gave resets some of the settings on the router, changes ur PPPoE settings to change to PPPoA! so if any1 follows the link in the post before this and ur internet connection doesnt work after, change from PPPoA to PPPoE and from VC Based to LLC Based.

Heheh

Sorry about that :) There was no intention to go about resetting people's internet :P

I've been having issues with the router because there is indeed a setting for modem and router but it doesn't seem to accept dialup unless it's set to modem only. Odd... I'll have to experiment :)

This is Crazy. Surely you should have to "positively" make a selection in the software/interface, to affect changes to the config.

Does anyony now if all ADSL Router/Models have this "function" or is this specific to netgear.

A lot of people are looking for this function - it has been discussed somewhere in this forum.

As I was reading it, I thought that maybe you could get a 'normal' router - a router than can connect with PPPoE but it doesn't have an in-built modem - and then buy an external ADSL modem.

Connect the ADSL modem to the switch so anyone can dialup if they want, including the 'normal' ADSL router, which will be used by people who shouldn't/couldn't dial up with their own settings.

I know this will work because I do it with Linux servers and ADSL modems - the trick here is to find a decent pre-packaged router that can connect to an external modem with PPPoE. Try netgear, d-link, linksys.

Yes but 10 points to anyone who can tell me how to get the netgear DG834 (which I got specifically because it WASNT marconi) to allow both dial-up and NAT :)
