Hi,

I just bought a Netgear Wired DG834 from incredible connection and I am trying to set it up, (I have a Vista Ultimate 64 machine).

The setup goes fine as far as I can tell, the power light is on, the ethernet I am using is on, (4 in this case), the DSL light is on, (not flashing).

When it comes to actually setting up the ISP it does not offer me South Africa, so regardless what other country I choose it tells me that it could not detect the ISP.

I cannot access http://192.168.0.1 because it takes me back directly to http://www.routerlogin.com/ca and tells me to choose a country.

As a test I went to setup a new connection and it does offer me "Boardband (PPPoE)" as an option but it cannot connect.

I can use my old modem to connect but it only works on WinXP, (I posted about it earlier), it is another machine.
So I know that my password and broadband are both working fine.
I am not trying to use both modems at the same time either, I am careful about it.

So, how can I connect, configure my Netgear modem?

Many thanks

I have been selling Netgear DG834's since ADSL became available in South Africa and have NEVER had the product fail on me. Configuration is a snap, the built-in firewall does its job, the VPN works first time.

For me it is a great product.

However a word of caution when it come to Vista.

DG834 is an IPv4 protocol router (last time I configured one)

Vista likes to use IPv6 protocol as a default instead of IPv4. Disable IPv6 in Vista and then connecting to the router is a breeze.

@FFMG If you can, reset the router to its defaults (use the little reset button at the back), use a XP machine to connect to the router itself at its default address (no IPv6 to worry about) and configure the thing to your liking.

THEN only connect the Vista machine with IPv6 disabled and it should work fine.

thanks for all the replies. I'll just return it.
some of you seem to forget that we don't al fall asleep hugging our modems and think we are the coolest of the coolest because we known what 192.168.0.1 is supposed to do.

Thanks for all the help.

Seeing as you only got one decent reply in this thread, I'll try to help out.

When you an ipconfig /all in a command prompt what does it say under "Default Gateway"?

If it's not the router's IP address, then try setting up a static IP and see if you can access 192.168.0.1 then.

Also, don't worry about people telling you Netgear is crap, it's a quality router.

Thanks, this solved the problem.

I am not worried, you often have people with little or no computer knowledge trying to blame their inability on the hardware/software.

It is just annoying that those same people try and give advise when they should keep quiet and learn from the real professionals how they should have done it properly in the first place.

I have been using a DG834GT for about 3 years now. To be honest, it's died twice, but each time Duxbury have replaced it with a brand new unit without any hassle.

And the rest of the time, it hasn't given any problems, and is nice and simple to use. So I wouldn't have any problem getting a Netgear again.

the netgear makes a file in your c drive that automatically runs the wizard when you acces the gateway of the router....find it delete the netgear folder you should be able to access router with username:admin and the password:password ... go to basic settings change encapsulation PPP over ethernet and your ISP username and password, enable the nat and click on adsl settings change the multiplexing to LLC based and the vpi - 8 and vc- 35 apply the adsl and basic settings...if your line is sychronizing after this logout and you should be able to connect now
