I have a NetGear DG834GT that was disconnecting sometimes, every week or so, so I was advised to reset the device, but everytime I hold the reset button at the back for 10 seconds or 20 seconds, the "power" and "test" light alternate blinking, I'm told this is test mode.

I then umplug and leave for 1min, repower but cannot connect with 192.168.01 or 192.168.1.1, cannot ping either.

So was advised to reflash with latest firmware, started the recovery program, downloaded latest firmware and started the eeprom and recovery program, detected that router was connected and displayed current firmware etc.
Started the upgrade - all went well.

But still cannot connect to router, have tried all the ports as well.
Tried XP, Windows 7 no go with either pc or laptop.

It's fooked. Take it back. I've had same issues before. Get another one.

Weird, I got in via wireless.

Did a factory reset from menu and now it works!

Thought I was going to have to buy another router.............eish

After I accessed via wireless, strange there was no password.

Did factory reset and can now access router via lan again, hope this thing is not on it's way out.

If it's still under warranty I would contact Netgear and ask them if it's packing up and if they confirm it is you should have it swapped.

There is also a little pinhole where you can stick a pin to do a factory reset AFAIK

Try a firmware update: http://support.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13321

if no luck after.. swap it out!

Think it's way out of warranty - was bought in 2009.

I'm back in business again, if it does go haywire again I'll just have to buy another one I suppose, this one get's HOT as well.

the hardware reset button on actual router doesnt seem to work at the moment, puts the device in "test mode" for firmware flashing as apposed to setting to factory settings.
To set to factory settings I had to access via wireless and then reset via the menu.

Then, do yourself a favor and buy a TP-Link Router
I use them for all my clients, best value for money, they are reliable easy to configure :)

I have this same router and mine started acting up earlier in the year. It worked fine except for the fact it would not establish an internet connection no matter what I did. I bought a replacement as I didn't have time to fiddle with this one.

I had some free time this last weekend and opened up the Netgear. The 2 main capacitors on the board has swollen up. I've replaced these (R1.40 each) and the problem is sorted.

These routers do run very hot. Open it up and check the board for any signs of obvious damage. If any capacitors have swollen instead of flat tops, just replace them. Presto.

I replaced my NetGear DG834GT with a TP-Link and the reception is pathetic compared to my old Netgear. The TP-Link was twin antennas and gets about a third of the coverage of my 5 year old Netgear. Not impressed :(
