Netgear DG834GT Problems ?

My new DG834GT (with the latest firmware) had a problem where it would freeze (looks connected but no net access, and can't access config) regularly. Had to power it down/up to get it working again. Rolled back the firmware to V1.01.28 and now its ace. Best router I've ever had.

i have a 834, stone throw away from the beach, and my modem is constantly downloading, and is nice and cold. No, i don't have aircon, and yes, my pc overheated recently - so yes it is very hot here. I know a few people with 834's - none of them are complaining!.

Re: my last post about my DG834GT 4 hours ago. I have just figured out that I wasn't holding down the reset button long enough, thanks to a comment in this thread. So I am now back on line having manually re-entered all my settings and with the 1.02.04 firmware. If it starts dropping the line again I will post. Thanks for the idea. It is however still EXTREMELY hot.

I have a bunch of Netgear DG834G's and wireless access points installed. No problem with any of them.

Also, Duxbury's support is very good regardless of where you bought the unit.

Right, regarding my DG834GT now running with the 1.02.04 firmware, it is still malfunctioning it seems to me. Whenever I use it I have to turn it on twice effectively. The first time I turn it on I can look at a few web pages and it gradually slows up and then keeps "waiting..." for ever. So, I turn it off and turn it on again and then it's fine irrespective of the temperature (I'm in the UK by the way). Odd. Any ideas anyone? Thanks.

have you submitted your problems on the netgear forum - they are most helpful. Also, When i first got my 834 modem, i had problems with it hanging! I was told to update the firmware - which resolved my problem. Never looked back.

And still - downloads are flying, and the unit is running nice and cold!.

I would also suggest, have your powersupply for the router checked if the correct amount power is being supplied. What could be happening, is that the unit is getting too much power, causing the onboard processor to overheat, causing the unit to slow down!.

I have the latest firmware in the router.
I will try this problem on the Netgear forum. The link mentioned earlier in this thread no longer works. It's here now -

Overheating cannot really be the cause since the problem kicks in too quickly. Thanks for your suggestion.

Perhaps the damage has indeed been done.

However judging from recent wild fluctuations in speed I have decided that the problem may be down to the ISP, namely Orange, who appear to have been making some kind of changes to the service. A couple of days back I couldn't connect at all over night but in the morning it was fine.

Makes little sense. Thanks for all suggestions.

Damn DG834gt!!!!

Hello guys!

Yep, I've also tripped over the damn DG834GT problem. Twice, in fact. I bought 2 units, one for home & one for office. Both worked for a while & then started 'locking me out'. 3 weeks of nightmares, calling Telcon, @lantic, Netgear etc. Just the usual finger pointing, no help at all. Caused HUGE upsets at office (we were effectively crippled). Resetting about 10 - 20 times per day.

After picking up this thread I was pleased to find out I was not alone! Thanks for the info on Version 1.01.28 firmware. Been working flat out no problem since Sunday 11th of Feb.

Then, BOOM, tonight, dreaded LOCKOUT  on home unit!!! Has anyone else had lock-outs with this version of firmware? If it happens again, I'm returning my unit to Dig Plan.

Any thoughts?

Ta,
Mike

Hi.

Had unit flat, but it got very hot. Have been vertical now for 4 days, and running pretty cool.

P.S. I am running Zone Alarm on my PC, because some idiot (or idiot programme) uses up between 400MB and 1GB of my bandwidth PER DAY!! (This equates to a whole month's usage for me!!!)

In the Netgear logs, I keep receiving TCP inbound traffic from 41.241.xx.xx up to 41.242.xx.xx Is this the heartbeat ping ICMP from @lantic? They cannot tell me what IP range they use!!

Ta,
Mike

Vertical is best. Zone Alarm is cr@p. Check for spyware, reset dsl password and router passwords. Turn off remote administration in ur router config. if it is enabled. Inbound connections are not normal unless u download torrents or run a online mail server or something which i dont think u do. I would check setup on router, prevent REMOTE ADMINISTRATION, priority number 1.

This lock out happens when the unit is over heating, I have mounted mine over a vent to keep it cool and that sorted the problem.

Yes, ZA seems to evoke emotions from the extremes. Some love it, some hate it. Personally, I'm scared cr@pless to turn it off - it's covered my @ss pretty well! I'm paranoid about spyware/virus/trojan/malware. Scan daily!

When I was losing BW, I downloaded a cool program called ADSL stats analyser - it confirmed no more than 2 concurrent connections (home & office). Thus, nobody was logged in as me. Must have been some kind of spyware working from the inside. ZA takes care of that. Spybot S&D is my favourite. What are u using?
