Hi there people, can anybody please help me with info and instructions?

I have a Netgear DG834GT router connected to two PC's via cable and a laptop via wireless.

Is it possible and how can I change my router settings to allow only the two PC's and laptop to access the internet via their current connections and other PC's to connect wireless to my router for network only and no internet access?

I live in a large house with a few wireless networks.
I want to share my internet connection only with my two PC's and laptop.
I want to be able to connect wirelessly to other wireless networks without giving them internet access, only be able to browse (local) network.

Is this possible and how?

I had my router previously set to modem only, but then it acts only as a modem with no wireless connection. I had to access the internet via Pppoe connection by double-clicking a icon on my PC to connect to my ADSL like a old dial-up modem. This allowed me to share internet connection with only the computers I wanted and still be able to access all the other computers on the network.
But now I need the wireless function on my router for my laptop (for internet) and to access other computers (for network access only)

Thanks for all the help.
Kind regards

Hi,

Most routers still act as a wireless access point even while in brigde mode (your previous setup).

You can either get another router, or maybe try and set it up so it only allows those PCs and laptop's MAC addresses to be authorized to connect. I don't know if it will have that capability.

I'm using a dlink but I've also got the kind of setup you looking for. Under the 'Advanced' tab just look for either Network Filter, Internet Filter or Mac Filter etc. It will give you an option to grant access the the listed Mac's or Deny access to the listed Macs. Note that with windows 7 you can do this without it affecting the other PC's network connectivity but XP machines must be connected to the network first before you do this otherwise they won't be able to connect to the network at all. W 7 pc's will just show a 'Limited Connection' and have access to all network resources except internet connection. Since I'm using a Dlink router this is just a guide.

Or set up the bridge mode and PPPoE on all the pc's you want connected, and make sure no-one else has your connection details...but then again, with Afrihost on this continent, it might just not work.....so I will put my bet on the filters thing mentioned in the previous post.

The Netgear DG834GT unfortunately don't have a propper bridge mode where you can setup PPPoE connections on the PC's and connect to the internet with the wireless still working.
For bridge mode using PPPoE you must use a hidden menu in the router to set it as only a modem, but as I said in my first post here, then the networking/wireless don't work and it acts like a dumb modem. You can't even access the web based settings of the router.

I'll try Romito's idea and see what happens.

Previously I had up to 8 computers connected by cable to a switch, with my router between my PC and the switch. My router was set as a dumb modem with no Internet account settings. The 2 PC's and my PC which I did allowe internet access via my router could connect to the internet via PPPoE by double-clicking an desktop icon to connect to the internet. Because there was no internet account login details on my router and the other PC's on the network did not have PPPoE connections with my internet account details, they could not access my internet account but everyone could access each other's computer via the network and switch. The router could also not act as a 'router'/hub/switch; it was just a modem.

When my router is setup as a normal router with factory settings and wireless function working (by pressing the reset button for 10 seconds); then you must have a working internet account login details entered into the router to get internet access. PPPoE connections cannot be setup this way because anybody who get access to the router via cable or wireless, will then get access to my internet account.

I thus want to connect another wireless network with my wireless network so everybody can view each other's computer, but only the computers I want to allow to access my internet account, may do so.

I hope this makes all sense. You can look at my previous post where I needed similar help but was different as I didn't need wireless access then.
I was then looking at setting up my router in bridge-mode with all the computers being able to access each other via cable connected to a switch, but only the computers I wanted to access my internet account could do so via PPPoE connection.
This howver won't do anymore as I need the wireless capability.

Thanks for your patience and help.
Regards

I have a WRT54GL infront of my DG834GT and from there I apply access filters on which MAC addresses can access the internet or not

Have You ever tried the Digiteam's Firmware? Please do as I believe that they enabled the proper bridging functions. I myself have not tested it with PPOE yet. You may find the firmware here.

If anything at least you will have a much better DG834GT modem with many more functions activated. Please POST/PM me your findings if you do try it.

PS: I tried PPPOE from my PC+Win7 and it works fine through the Netgear 834GT with the Digiteam firmware. Will try with another PC (Two concurrent connections) later.

I've got the DG834G and it can do PPPoE connection. from a workstation provided you use a "backdoor" setting. If you search the forums you'll find some people who've attempted and succeeded however you do lose functionality of the build-in router PPPoE account i.e. can't do client-side traffic routing to different accounts where one is the router account. Basically as far as I know the DG834 range support only router or full-bridge mode i.e. no half-bridge (think I got the bridging modes right).

As far as allowing only certain workstations internet access, you could probably configure the router firewall and only allow outbound HTTP(S) and other protocols to a certain range of IP addresses of those workstations to which you want to grant access. Obviously open other protocols to the specific addresses as required otherwise all workstations will have access to those protocols.

I have the same router and you can switch it to "modem only" as stevenv says.

You need to go to the page directly it will be : http://<ROUTER_IP>/setup.cgi?next_file=mode.htm

I can't remember all the limitations it gives but give it a go and see if you can do all you want to do.

Thanks stevenv and blunt.
Blunt - I do know about the modem only option and link to do it. This is how my router used to be setup. But like you said, then it's only a modem and have no routing functionality and no wireless function. I did mention this in my previous posts too. But I now do need the wireless function and thus the modem only option is not going to work anymore.

stevenv - i'll look into your option of the http settings etc.

Oh yes, and just for interest, it seems that when this router is used as modem only with PPPoE instead of normal router, then the internet speed seems to be slower :(

Tried the DG team firmware? It works for me as router and PPPOE, both at once without a mode change and the wireless PS3 is still fine.
