I have an external HDD attached to the USB port of my Netgear DG834GUv5. When I use an FTP client, I have no problems transferring files to and from the HDD attached to the router. But when I try and transfer files to the attached HDD using WinXP Local Network Places or even as a mapped drive in WinXP, it works for a short while and then gives an error that the specified path no longer exists (then my router locks up and loses internet access and I have to restart the router). Are there any ports that I need to open or any settings I need to change on the router?

Hi. How did you resolve this problem? I got the same router today and I'm having the same problem as you.

Invested a substantial amount of time in trying to get it to work. Microsoft blamed Netgear, Netgear blamed Win XP. Googled everything until Google issued me with bot warnings. There was a stage when it worked for around a 24 hour period. Too many variables across the network so wasn't able to replicate the exact software/network environment which pleased the Piece-of-S. We are not the only ones, there are other threads here on myBB. Don't even go there, it will consume you, yes it will eat your soul :p
