Experiencing a problem with connectivity that i would appreciate some input on. My setup is as follows:
- Netgear DGND4000 router
- WD MyCloud storage device connected to router via Ethernet cable (let's call this my NAS device)

On the NAS device, i have all my movies/series, etc. Every now and then, a family member will drop off a hard drive and ask for updates. I use a program called Beyond Compare to perform a folder compare between the NAS device and the lazy family member's hard drive. Using Beyond Compare, i then copy the new series/movies to the hard drive. The hard drive will be linked to my laptop via USB. The copy thus takes place across the wireless network, via the laptop.

The problem is that, as soon as i schedule a copy, it affects my internet browsing. Today, the sum total copied was about 30Gigs, and during that time, i could not access the internet, and when accessing router login, that was sketchy as well. As soon as i paused the copy, and restarted my browser (Chrome), i could browse the Net again. I then started one copy of a 1Gig file, and the internet connectivity immediately dropped.

Thus, my assumption is that, while copying across my LAN, i cannot browse. Normally, i start the copies and go out or do other stuff - thus, it may always have been like this.

Any ideas? The DGND4000 is a pretty decent router - is it just a case of the processor in the router being overburdened?

Going to start copying again for a while, so will check this thread a bit later.

Looks like Beyond Compare is a bit buggy (though the reviews I've seen are from 2012).

If you're on Windows check out the command line tool called robocopy, it's very efficient and has the functionality you're looking for (mirror directories).

Generally speaking, I avoid copying large files over wireless as gigabit ethernet is far superior to wireless N.

Thanks wudisk. Being using beyond compare for some time - pretty good. I like the GUI - easier than robocopy:)

For your info there is a GUI for Robocopy.
See http://technet.microsoft.com/en-za/magazine/2006.11.utilityspotlight%28en-us%29.aspx

I dont use it much as I prefer the Robocopy CLI

If your router processor is struggling during a copy, note that Robocopy has a /ipg switch that enables you to slow down the copy. this switch was created to prevent copies across a WAN from killing a link. See http://windowsitpro.com/windows-server/robocopy-over-network
