On XP you just open run type //and the IP

Not working. Maybe it will work as soon as i can ping the PC's both ways.

I'm trying since friday to connect. I think my best bet is to get a Pci LAN card and connect straight via LAN ports to transfer files, and use the modem only for internet which is working fine.

Thx very much KhoisanX, howardb & Keegan for your input in this thread. Very much appreciated...:)
I've decided to go for a PCI LAN card.

1 last thing you can try is disable the firewall on both pc's then check if you can ping.

Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.3
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.2
DHCP Server . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.2
DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.0.0.2

Nobody said anything abount dns?

If you switch to static, i.e. if you set your ip addresses as 10.0.0.*, and you configure the gateway as 10.0.0.2,
remember to set your dns to 10.0.0.2 as well, or your browsing won't work.

I'll try this, but i don't have a browsing/internet problem only ping & file sharing/transfer problem.

It wouldn't have worked either way because he was changing PC ip's not the router IP range.
But there is no need to change IP's for what CellBel wants to do, DHCP is fine.

Regarding the firewall, i've spotted something strange. The one green firewall light stays on, but it's disabled.
Check pic: http://mybroadband.co.za/photos/showphoto.php/photo/35090/title/fwall/cat/2
On 2nd PC both lights are off.

I've also disabled Comodo at startup & restarted & uninstalled Zone alarm on the 2nd PC. I also disabled IPv6 on both PC's.
Still cannot ping PC's, but that one green FWall button that stays on doesn't make sense to a noob like me.

This is on XP SP3

That's weird, what anti-virus are you using?

Keegan i don't blame you cos my braincells will pop if i go on like this...:)
Thx again for your time and info. A LAN PCI card is the answer here.

from what I have read, why would you need separate card?

why not just connect PC to PC with on-board NIC?

also, with all these settings recommended, there should be some common ground.

ie do 1 and stick to it and try sort it from there before moving on.

so would say, do something simple like:
1 - give your modem/router an IP change and make it 192.168.1.1
2 - make sure DHCP is enabled on it
3 - check all PCs for auto IP obtaining

then let us know how it goes and we try sort from there with those 'basic' changes

Thx Off-The-Chart i've decided to add a PCI LAN card which will be better for the future, cos if i decide to quit this month to month (no debit order) Telkom service, then it will have no effect on the network to my 2nd PC. I have no problem connecting straight from and to LAN ports, it's only via a router where my age catches up with me. I'll use Telkom Netgear modem only for internet.
BTW my on-board NIC is connected to my Netgear N300.

hmmm, that post makes some of the previous posts bit vague

how exactly is your setup?

ie:
PC1 > N300
PC2 > N300
Modem > N300

??
