Netgear N300 Router - WiFi settings

Hi.
I've just purchased the Netgear N300 ADSL router for SOHO use. I noticed that as soon as I'm out of line-of-site of the router, the wifi signal drops to the point where it's out of range - even if it's just in the next room.
My neighbour is using a Billion router without an extender and although the signal is weak, I can see and connect to his router!

Can anyone please advise me as to what the N300 wifi settings should be configured to for optimal wifi performance?

WPA2-PSK (AES) encryption.
Try another channel.
All routers were not created equal.

Upgrade the firmware... Usually that solve the problem.
