Looks like my Netgear hardware isn't done giving me problems.
I have a Netgear DG 834 GT router.

Out of nowhere, it has decided to randomly block websites over the wireless network. News24, IOL, it's own Admin panel... funnily enough, myadsl.co.za works so I can post here.
Connecting via ethernet cable to the router allows accessing the admin panel.

When trying to access the admin panel wirelessly it will ask for login and password, but then just give me an error. Google Chrome shows "Error 101 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_RESET): Unknown error."

Tested from my Android phone to make sure it wasn't just my PC. Same problems there.

In case it helps, attempted tracert of iol.co.za:

Tracert to webafrica.co.za (my ISP) is fine but the site still gives me the reset error.

I already tried a factory reset by holding that little button for 30 seconds and re-configuring everything. It is on the latest official firmware.
This problem randomly started today.

So... what's a good wireless router to buy if replacing this is my only option?

If you suggest Netgear I'll throw my router at your head :p

sounds fckd. reflash firmware (i have hear lighting storms can change bits in ROM chips O_o ) and try again. if still problem, open it up, take out the mini-PCI card + antenna for future use, and then use it as a normal router. then get billion. billion doesnt break. ever.

If this doesn't work then I'd say it's screwed, destined for the scrap heap. I've had mine about 4 years now, hasn't missed a beat.

I can't read that. Please quote it here :(
Yea it blocks the Netgear site too.

I tried re-flashing firmware. No help. I hate you Netgear, I hope you die.

This is so damn weird. Everything works fine via cable but it blocks seemingly random sites wirelessly.

Did you try changing the wireless frequency/band?

Someone I knew once had weird wireless issues at the ordinary frequency, and a change to that sorted it.

That link was just a firmware upgrade (DG834GT Firmware Version 1.03.23) with the following fixes:
1. Fixed a problem where DHCP times out with certain ISPs after 24 hours, requiring a reboot to refresh.
2. Fixed a problem where IP addresses were not reserved properly in some cases.

You mean the channel? Tried that...

Ok now it gets weirder. If I don't try to login to the admin panel on my PC, my phone can log into it. Now my phone can access the blocked sites too.
What the hell? Why is my phone suddenly fine with it again but my PC isn't?

Tried switching off my phone wifi so only my PC was connected. Didn't help.

How good are the D-Link wireless N routers? I see PC Zone has them for R700. Good buy?

Please post the D-Link router model number...
The DSL-2760U goes for R700 in most of the shops.

You won't be disappointed with any D-Link or TP-Link modem/router.

My experiences with Billion were that they arrived broken. The WORST routers I have ever seen!

But my experience with this Netgear router is that after several years of good service it suddenly starts acting weird. My wireless also broke after 5 years. I fixed it by doing a 30-30-30 hard reset and reflashing the firmware. Then I bought a new one anyway.

30-30-30 hard reset: while the router is on press and hold the little reset button for at least 30 seconds. Disconnect the power while still holding down the button and hold for 30 seconds. Then reconnect the power and hold for a further 30 seconds. (I use my toe to switch it off at the wall.)

Ok major WTF moment! It's working fine again :wtf:

All I did was leave the house and come back

PC restarts, router resets, firmware flashing, all did nothing. But when I just leave home for a few hours it does the trick. This thing must be programmed to mess with me.
And no, nobody was home that was smart enough to do a prank like this...

If this happens again I'll be replacing the damn thing though.
