Hi Guys,

Just recently upgraded to VDSL. Collected a Netgear VEVG2660.

How do I set this router up act as my modem only? I have an ASUS RT-AC66U connected to a TP-link ADSL modem currently. I basically want to just replace the current modem (TP-Link) with the Netgear.

For the life of me I cannot see how to put the Netgear into modem only mode.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Had one of those, but returned it.
Telkom's firmware is poor and highly restricted.
Can't recall seeing the function. You need to set it into bridge mode.
It might be hidden.

My suggestion - call Netgear SA. They are supposed to be supporting this for Telkom.
Call the Joburg number.

When I returned it, the 0860 number on the modem was not operational.

Cheers I might just bin the POS. It randonmly loses DNS settings (happened twice), and the dynamic DNS does not work (I've tried using both dyndns and noip accounts it regsiters once then stops updating on subsequent IP changes. Horrible piece of kit!

If I may ask what are you using atm?

I've also got this issue. I setup the router with PPPoE Relay enabled for DSL WAN, however connecting my machine doesn't work. I chatted to the Netgear support and the lady on the other side said it is working for her...

lol! Ordered the TP-Link TD-W9980 just waiting for it's delivery. Can't get delivered soon enough.

Indeed a POS. I have had it for 6 days now and its just taking a break while downloading/uploading. I tried the exact same speed test with the exact same ISP account on a Pace router and it works flawlessly.

I just tried reporting the router and the lady says I have fiber and redirects my call...

I bought one of these and the Telkom firmware is terribly crippled and lacking in any degree of useful information (modulation type, etc.) and on top of that none of the normal telnet-enablers for Netgear routers work on this device.

I'm going to return it (hopefully they'll give me my money back, it's quite new) but I don't know whether to get the Billion 8880NXL or the Zyxel VMG1312. They're both similarly priced and I already have a wifi AP I'm happy with, all I need is something to talk VDSL and give me useful information/diagnostics when I need it.

Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated!

I settled for the Billion 8800NXL however hit snags with it.
The modem itself is perfectly ok. Holds a connection fine. Has detailed stats. Pretty nice actually.
There are however major issues with WiFi strength as well as an odd gateway latency issue.
I'm in contact with Billion trying to get to a resolution. Will give it another month before calling it quits.

  1. WiFi strength - there's only a 2db internal antenna - weaker than my prior 8-year old Netgear - and it poses issues. Signal dropouts occur in adjoining rooms. Not good at all. Billion are trying to find a resolution.
  2. Gateway Latency - get weird spikes between a connected device and gateway. Managed to get it somewhat stable with updated laptop drivers however the spikes are still there. It doesn't affect connectivity but I hadn't experienced this on my prior router.

So all in all as I've mentioned it's a solid modem with good stats, etc but the WiFi sucks.
Not 100% convinced with Zyxel. Have seen numerous complaints about the lack of updates.
The other option might be the mentioned TP-Link W9980 VDSL router. It's now available. Takealot has it for around R1700.

If there are no options forthcoming from Billion I might buy a standalone router and hook that up to the 8800NXL.
Better bang for buck. The 8800NXL costs around R900 and a real good TP-Link router can be had for less than R1k.

Good luck with the choice.
I'd recommend purchasing your device from a store with a no quibble return policy.

Rgds,
SD.

Hi,

The assumption is that modem only mode refers to bridge mode.

The following worked for me.

Log into the router
* GoTo advanced -> setup -> internet settings
* select "does not require password"
* scroll down to NAT settings
* select bridge

I managed to get PPPoE relay working by updating the firmware(same version) and pressing the reset button on the router itself with a toothpick.

s anyone else experiencing and problems with Telkom's VEVG2660 Netgear router? I am not the brightest when it comes to setting up comms between my branches, so I use Telkom's VPNlite, because I found the setup relatively straight forward! Telkom supplied routers come with a VPN setup utility to config the the routers! Mainly I have been using the Billions & Netgear routers, things have been going well until my Netgear DGN 2200 gave up the ghost, telkom replaced it with the new monster Netgear VEVG2660, the VPN setup wizard doesn't seem to work, it save my settings but now I can't connect to my server, I ping the IP's addresses of the server and router, and both respond but my server will not let me remote connect, on telkoms VPNLite web site, it tells me my VPN is connected!

Any ideas please!

How do I put the Telkom Netgear VEVG2660 into bridge mode?
