Netlimiter

hey all,

Lately my parents pc has been draining all our bandwidth,

Been using netlimiter to try and limit their usage in browsers and limit their download programs but my dad is not an id10t and figured it out and got rid of netlimiter.

Is there any other programs that do something similar but that I can hide or password protect so he cannot just remove it?

I do :mad: and that is why i'm getting so annoyed about it. I have asked them so many times to stop downloads and youtube video's at night when I want to play games after work then they stop for a week and after that they just carry on like I never said anything. Once landed up in a huge argument and that is when I started using netlimiter, but my dad has been doing his own research because he figured out his connection was slow and kept asking me and I kept saying I don't know why but seems he has deleted netlimiter and now I lag to death again in games.

as for what he is downloading, well he enjoys downloading classic bike video's and classic car video's, Like he will set a full season of F1 to download from youtube and just leave it on.

Also damn facebook games seem to kill the connection alot(my mom to blame there).

Well it's not that I want to throttle it as much as I don't really have a choice, The cost of my internet is a good portion of my salary and when I want to use it and feel that the bandwidth is not being shared equally then I have no choice but to limit them to try and share it equally.

Well it is my 2 pc's and their pc all sharing an uncapped account but there PC seems to use 95% of the bandwidth available where my 2 gets to share the last 5%.
 
Can you not prioritise certain traffic based on the protocol in your router?

I have checked but my router (netgear DG834 v3, the old ones) is so old it has no port prioritization or any QoS on it. I have been looking to buy a new router to accomodate this but things at the moment are not going so well for me on the money side.

I have been considering building up the old P4 I got (hope it still works) and installing a linux gateway but that just sounds like a lot of work. Netlimiter was working well until he figured it out so wish I could just password protect it from gaining access.

Who's house is it ? :D

If everything is yours then you must lay down the law.... or they must get their own line.
 
You can also run Netlimiter as a process in the background, but that would not prevent him from stopping or uninstalling it again.

hahaha, well it is their house but at the end of the day I pay rent + l&w and food etc as well as I pay for the line and let them on, I have tried to set the law but whenever I say anything im always the selfish one or a big argument happens and then my dad gets all pissed off for weeks. Never ends well basically so that is why I need to limit them, I would gladly even just split the bandwidth 50/50 because my games dont use that much bandwidth.
