Seeing that there's going to be "serious" punishment for going over the 20G limit ,how reliable is NetMeter in tracking bandwidth usage?

Well if u r still on contract I think the soft cap will still apply. I exceed my cap last month by about a gig and nothing extra was charged - I'm with Nowire.

I also use netmeter, it's reliable as long as u open it before u start browsing/dl, etc - I've forgotten it on a few occ.

If you don't have a home network as well, NetMeter is fine, whether ethernet or USB. If you do, but you connect via USB, Netmeter is also fine. In both cases the interface to monitor contains only Internet traffic. However, if you run thru a router and have a home network, you have a problem, since the interface you monitor will also contain traffic between PCs.
