South African vehicle tracking company sends warning to customers

Altron-owned vehicle tracking firm Netstar has started notifying customers whose data was exposed in a data breach to support them in taking necessary steps to protect their personal information.

This comes after Netstar suffered a ransomware attack in June 2025 and subsequently discovered that some customer data had been published by threat actors.

According to the company, exposed personal data may include the following, depending on customers’ relationship with Netstar:

• Names and contact details
• Account or customer reference numbers
• Identity or company registration details
• Banking details contained in billing records or debit order instructions
• Vehicle details, including registration number, make, and model
• Physical and postal addresses

“We have already directly contacted anyone whose current credit card details may have been accessed,” said Netstar.

It added that it immediately contained the incident and engaged legal counsel and independent cybersecurity experts to assess potential risks to personal information.

“At the time, there was no evidence of any impact on customer data. Subsequently, we identified that data linked to Netstar had been published on a restricted-access site used by the threat actors,” it said.

According to the scope that they have admitted to, "that may include", there must have been an impact. The legal counsel is damage control and mitigation. The cybersecurity experts, uhm, I doubt their assessment would be put on public record.

No matter how they are spinning it, anyone who is compromised is already harmed.
