Hi all,

My Eskom electricity bill has a line item "Network Access Charge @ R2.32 per day" for the number of days in the billing period (this is an excl. VAT amount). I assume that a similar fee is levied by the municipalities and businesses pay more.

Should we not be credited for the Network Access Charge during periods of load shedding, power failures, blackouts, etc.? Surely, we should not be paying the Network Access Charge when no service is provided, and your access to electricity grid is unavailable.

For each home user this amount is small, but cumulatively the amount is reasonably large if you consider the total number of households and businesses impacted by load shedding.

That network access charge is complete BS. As my father would say, you are being charged for the privilege of being able to turn on the lights even though you have to pay for the electricity that light would use.

This is the reason why I refuse to stay in a place that doesn't have the electricity included in the rent or has pre-paid electricity.
