I have a HP Pavilion dv6000 and a Netgear router. I get internet connectivity over wireless. When I plug in the network cable nothing happens. I cannot even get into the menu to change ip address etc. The network icon in the tray just shows a red cross over it. The router network lights blinks green, but it is a slow blink, not the activity fast blink.

I have another network cable plugged into another PC. The light on the router is steady green. When I plug that cable into my laptop it flashes slow green again.

So it can't be the cable.

I have restarted both laptop and router. Same problem. I plugged another laptop into the network cable and the light on the router is steady green with internet connection.

So it seems that the adapter on my laptop is gone. Which is strange. I did last use the adapter over the weekend at a LAN and it worked fine.

Im suspect that the network adapter has gone. Am I correct or is it possible a software / setting problem? Im using Vista. Maybe virus related?

If it's hardware what do you guys recommend I do to fix it? I bought the laptop at incredible corruption and the guarantee is over.

You were at a LAN it's most likely got a virus and that you can sort out first, try boot a linux live CD and test the networking that way otherwise if it is blown you can get a usb to ethernet adapter or even a PCMCIA NIC.

Thanks for the advice. It was a virus. A few of my mates at the LAN suffered the same fate.

haha actually it was an innocent poker game that we played, that spread the virus!
