You should be good up to around 100M at 100Mb/s with normal CAT5 cable before experiencing cross-talk. Just keep it away from power circuitry for best results.

I have a 50m one connecting two offices - works perfectly. Cat5 is rated for 100m AFAIK, and it should be able to be longer, but with increasing packet loss.

As said above, you milage may vary depending on interference.

try using cat 5e and use nice quality boots. if it doesn't work, try dropping to 10baseT.

If there is power, what you could also do is 25M - HUB - 25M that would work better if DC is available at the halfway point.

but its a bit of a trail and error because it depends on the shielding quality and the amount of electricity in the cable's vicinity.

let us know what happens!

50M should be fine, keep it at least 3M away from any fluroescent lights, and don't run it in the same skirting as your power cables, I.E. dont run it parallell to any power cables closer than 1M. taking it perpendicularly (90 degrees) over a power cable is fine though.

Seriously, power cables aren't such a big issue, especially if theyre the cables that run thoughout offices.

You'll notice offices with build in trunking run the power cables in the bottom section and the network / phone cables in the top section (about 10cm's apart).

I've run a CAT5e cable between 2 offices like this at a distance of 132m without any problems, it's running 1000Mbits between 2 switches.

Agreed that the power cables are not such a big issue over shorter distances. The combi type trunking is fine because the data is totally separated from the power by a grounded metal plate, hence no crosstalk, even though the cables are only 10 cm apart.

You should be fine with +-50mtr as mentioned above CAT5 100mtr CAT5e 90mtr Personally I have pushed at 125mtr but y.m.m.v.
