Network Cable Unplugged

Ok this problem has blown me away. No idea why it happened in the first place. Basically, here's the problem. I have a desktop PC connected to a ethernet port in my dorm room. I also have a laptop that I need connected to the internet. So I decided to bridge the wireless and ethernet connections on the desktop so my laptop can connect and use the internet.

Everything went downhill after this. My ethernet connection now says "Network Cable Unplugged" even though the cable is in. I've tried:
- deleting the bridge connection
- resetting both ethernet and wireless connections
- reinstalling drivers
- trying different PC's

Nothing seems to work. What did work was a different ethernet port in another room...

Does anyone know if this little experiment could have stuffed the port up? Or is there another fix I should try?

Thanks,
Sysem

Do you perhaps have a P7P55 motherboard?

Nope, don't have that motherboard. And I'm not investing in another card if it still works, just not on my port. Works fine on all other ports

Yip, tried new cable, that didn't help either.

Multiple, Ubuntu and Win7.

So this happens in both Ubuntu & Win7?

In Ubuntu I can tell you network manager does not allow two auto configured concurrent connections, it will shut one down. Think one or both have to be configured as static in order to get ICS to work.

Same might apply in Win7 but I'm just guessing here.

Well I tried the bridge in Win7, but both Win7 and Ubuntu say the network cable is unplugged. No idea why though

Then borrow someone else's card. How are you going to test it if you don't try another card?

Internal NIC's cost about R90 these days. Peanuts.
Wireless dongle's are always a bit more, but it is always great to have a spare around.

Or find a mate who has one and borrow it and test.

By "port" I meant my dorms port. Not my PC port. That's fine. My PC's network card isn't the problem as it works everywhere else.

As for the bridge question, both the bridged connection and ethernet connection say cable unplugged. So I removed the bridged connection, but the ethernet connection still says its unplugged

Wheres your router? in your room or in a central location that the whole dorm uses?

Probably a central location. All I have access to is the port.
