Network HDD - why?

I understand people buy this to share storage space, but I can't understand why ... so I'm guessing I'm missing something.

Why can't they buy a normal internal or external and share the HDD on the network? Also USB or internal will be quicker than the LAN on the networked HDD?

I also don't understand.... I have 3 computers and I use Network?

Maybe when the main PC fails you can still access the data/businees program via Network HDD.

Is it that hard to understand? It's like using a network printer.... you aren't dependent on any computers to be on to be able to utilize it....

Nope, I use dependant printers only the Business program via network.

It's because this network storage unit will have redundancy in the form of RAID implemented, making it a safer place to store "work" than the desktop computer, and it will be a central point from which to run backups.

Exactly. Also because it is a network device for the sole purpose of accessing data remotely, not sharing data + [insert applicable tasks here]. If you dont understand why people buy network storage systems then:

a) you haven't really given it much thought
b) probably won't need one
c) have a small slow network (see option b)

Dark agent is also on the right track. In the event of a system sharing data going down for what ever reason, network storage is your best and only option. Sharing files from a desktop system also may not be ideal because of the OS.

Yes - I'm running a small home network with 3 computers. I'll be needing an extra 1TB of HDD space soon and would rather look at pros/cons of eash item (internal vs external vs NAS) before chosing something I'd not happy with. Remember, not everyone on here is involved in IT and all I asked was the merits and if I'd missed anything in my assumption.

Comments such as that highlighted is what I'm after.

If you have a computer at home that is on more than it is off then I'd suggest rather getting an external and sharing it. NAS is awesome (assuming you have a network that is fast enough) but is unfortunately a little expensive. It also sucks if you are running on wireless (54Mbps->~max 3MBps). 100Mbps is okay for it (10~12MBps) but Gigabit is preferable.

I don't like the network attached storage because it can be slow. But it is great for offline storage that is ON all the time (when all the other PCs are turned off). It can also be useful for backup purposes. But good luck on finding a nice fast one and getting it configured.
