Hey Guys.

Can Anyone recommend a network cable installer.

Had a chap out to my house to quote on putting in 9 points.

Quote came to R8070.00

Considering the total cable use would be 200 odd meters, I felt it was a bit much to be charging 6500 odd rand for a days labour.

The going rate is around R550 per point for Cat5e and around R650-R750 per point for Cat6.

If that includes a wall box and patch panel I'd say it's a good deal.

I've done a breakdown - which includes everything this guys quote didn't.

For parts
1 of 24 Port Cat6 Rack Mount Patch Panel
1 of 6U Fixed Wall Box
1 of 305M Box Cat6 Solid UTP Cable
10 of .5M UTP Cat6 Flylead
10 of 5M UTP Cat6 Flylead
10 of Cat6 Single Surface Mount Box
1 of UTP Krone Tool
10 of CAGE NUTS
1 Of 350mm 19-inch Front Mount Tray
1 Of UTP Stripper Tool

The Total is R3600.

I still don't see how one can justify that expense for a few hours labour. Unless of course a qualified engineer is getting up in my ceiling to run the points.

Mayhaps your location would help source an installer local to you ;)

You make good point PsyWulf.

I live in Joburg, Randburg, Blairgowrie

You mentioned surface mount, will his price include trunking?

if you know your way with crimping and such. Get those day labourer electrician types outside builders warehouse, though i'd ask neighbours and friends in the area for a referral (paranoid like that) and let them do the running of cable to your specs. You simple crimp each point.

For proper electric stuff i'll hire a proper electrician, but for stuff like this, they cant really stuff things up right... right?

Why not go wireless?

I have a few terrabytes of data on my NAS.

Wireless just is so terribly slow. With the layout of my house, I use wireless purely for mobile connectivity.

U can always get proper wireless 600MBS , ap + dongles will still be cheaper than R8k

Will be at best 600Mbps.

I've already got wireless throughout the house, which is great for email or streaming a movie. For stability, large copies etc, a wired network is always best.

I've got a number for a guy that does cabling in Jhb
