Hi all,

I want to have some pcs on my home network to be contained from others(i.e. internet shared amongst 3 or 4 pcs, but the others on the network can't get access to internet) while still being able to browse everyone's shares. The internet connection is not on the server. Can anyone tell me how to do this easily. Have got MS Win2003 server and all rest of pcs WinXP Pro SP2(latest). Should I be using a proxy??

Thanks,
Ploemps

Very easy.

Check the current "Default Gateway" setting of a workstation with internet access. It should be the IP address of the LAN port on the Internet router.

Leave this on all workstations that require internet access. On all the others remove the DG address. This will effectively block them from the internet, while still allowing full local subnet access including file+print sharing.

BTW - Sounds like a nice home network with server, 6+ workstations running WinXP ProSP2 and broadband internet.

Or another way u can assign static IPs all round and then on the router block the IPs of the PCs that u don't want internet access... Works on my router donno about yours. Mine is a linksys wag54 something or other...

Ok, thanks for replies, but I sorted it out. Using DHCP as got a few laptops that work on a few seperate networks. One of the main things i need is control. i.e. limiting access to certain peeps. Downloaded antibody's proxy server and it works perfectly. Access restricted to certain peeps without the password. Kudos to antibody.
