Anyone know if the below information is still relevant: https://mybroadband.co.za/news/tele...etwork-locked-smartphone-in-south-africa.html

Particularly for Cell-C, you just pay R150 and they unlock it?

When requesting a network unlock code (NUC), Cell C customers must have a non-Cell C SIM on hand.

The airtime balance required for a network unlock depending on the device’s price bracket is as follows:

  • For devices priced at R799 and under — R75
  • For devices priced at R800 and above — R150

Plus the above post should be relevant so go to the shop and ask them if you not in luck message me I’ll do it

So cell c apparently don’t unlock iPhones despite telling me to recharge with R150 to initiate the unlock process.

There's network locked iPhones in south africa? or is it an imported one?

It’s locked to cell c so I doubt it was imported. I don’t understand how they can lock them but not be able to unlock them. They told me they aren’t able to get the codes.

I have no issue with using cell c, the problem comes when traveling abroad and needing to use a local sim.

Which iPhone?

Out of curiosity what does it say under Settings > General > About > Network Provider Lock?

iPhone 13.

That’s the odd thing, it says “No Sim Restrictions” but only Cell C sims work in it. I knew it was locked when I bought it because the seller told me it was, that’s why it was so cheap.

It was brand new, sealed. Activation date March 2023.

Cell C directed me to Apple to unlock it while Apple clearly states :

I’m not sure that will work. Like I said, I knew it was locked to cell c when I bought it. Just trying to understand how they’re able to lock iPhones but not able to unlock them.

She explicitly said “we can’t get the codes for iPhones”.

They’ve told me they can unlock all other manufacturers though. Is it something that Apple does for them before sending them the phones, perhaps?

Its possible a corrupt carrier update was received, a clean reload of iOS might fix that, shot in the dark, but you never know :)
