network losing links problem

Will something like ClearOS not alleviate that problem?

ClearOS,any linux/unix derivatives. Even those Mini Android SMB servers, basically not windows OS but SMB capable

Okay now we have some more clarity. The desktops are losing connectivity due to the limits applied to connections to the SMB share on windows ( to prevent people using desktop OS as server OS )

Using something like a dropbox client or an FTP client and server will allow them to avoid the connection restriction. You can write a .bat file to start an FTP client and download latest versions of all files on the "server",or use a dropbox client on the desktop machines and server ( if the files arent big ) or upgrade your "server" to either use linux with samba,or a server OS ( a la server 2003,2008,2008R2,2012 ) to replace the SMB share with one without said limits.

I have a shortcut on my desktop that fires up an FTP client and downloads/resumes downloads of files. Basically Windows File Sharing is the issue

right that makes sense now.

great thanks guys I appreciate all your input.

Just one other thing. I was assuming the server was running FileZilla on Linux (lol).

The maximum number of simultaneous connections XP home allows is 5 - regardless of what number of users you enter. That's the problem.

If you have a spare XP Pro license you can go up to ten, which would solve your problem.

Till they have more than 10 users or stagnating connections not timing out,if you're gonna bother to fix it might aswell fix it permanent :P

thanks guys I'm trying to locate a XP Pro disk. they seem to be scarce? :(

would be nice to move over to Linux. back in the early 90's I worked for a company that had a SunVision Sparc station running Unix and a novel network for 10 pc users - absolutely flawless. I guess MS can do it but on a tight budget one has to make do :(

thanks once again for all your input.
