Network speed- sends faster than receives. Why?

Odd problem. Laptop with Vista (I know...).

Can send at up to 38MB/s, only receives at 10MB/s. (speeds should be limited by HDD, not NIC)

So outbound traffic is going at 1Gbps, inbound at only 100Mbps. This is the case both at work and at home.

Why would the be the case and how can I fix it?

Have you takening into account the limitations of what you downloading from? , sounds like it might only have a 100mbps nic ? could also be that the swich you going through is swiching you down to thoughs speeds

Not downloading at those speeds. This is SA...

File transfers over network. Got a 1GB LAN, switches etc. Evidence of this is being able to send at ~35 megs a second (paste over network). 2 minutes later, when I receive (copy over network), my speed maxes out at 10 megs a second.

Could the switch at work I guess. At home, via crossover I get the same problem though.

Create a RAM drive and see how fast you can download onto that, because I suspect that your laptop hard drive cannot write fast enough - but 10MB/s is a bit slow, unless your drive is heavy fragmented!

Will look into that.

Thing is, if it can read HDD, to send data over network at 30 megs a second, it should surely be able to write to the same HDD at a similar speed? Copying from ext. USB2.0 HDD goes at 20 megs a second. So, that eliminates the HDD.

It's probably some siff Vista setting. I've tried googling to fix that side of things, so far no luck.

No, there is a difference between read and write speeds.
If the hard drive is heavily fragmented, then the difference between the read and write speed will get bigger as well.

This is why I'm running Smart Defrag from IOBit on my Laptop to defrag my hard drive, but you'll get much better speeds when you have more free space (30%) left rather than defragging it regularly.

Defragged using Auslogics free defragger.

Did laptop and external USB drive. Tried new file transfers- same story. There is now also 30% free space on laptop. No difference. It consistently sits at 10 megs- that's not an arbitrary number. It's somehow a limitation of the NIC/Vista that throttles bytes received but not bytes sent (up to 38 meg/s- limited by slow HDD/fragmentation etc). 100Mbps down, 1Gbps up.
