Network throttling software

I need something specific though. I've got a 384k line and want to download on it without disrupting browsing on other PCs.

The problem with all the software throttling out there (netlimiter, netbalancer, fdm throttle etc) is that if you set it to 50% of line speed then it downloads flat out for ~2 sec then does nothing for ~2 sec, yielding an avg of 50% of line speed.

End result is that every 2 sec the line is unusable for a bit.

I'm looking from something that will really throttle it to the set amount and not just give an average like that.

And for the network people: Is that even possible?

Your download manager, newsreader, utorrent etc should all allow you to set max download speed. Dunno what you are using though.

+1
I check my max attainable downstream speed via my AltBinz newsreader downloads, running at full throttle (say it comes to 48KBps)
Then I set up this info in the application settings - there is usually an option to set you line type or max line speed - or set it to one of the presets usually shown
Then set the program to throttle the downstream speed to say 60% or 80% of that max speed, so it'll D/L at 60% of the 48KBps
This should give you plenty of general browsing speed
You should be good to go.

If you can let us know which application(s) you need to do this on, we can give you a full noddy guide.

Thanks for the replies.

Well, these are HTTP downloads, so I tried netlimiter, netbalancer and the throttling in free download manager.

Try setting one of these to 10KB/s and look at the lights on your router. It shows a pattern like this: 1sec downloading, 5 sec pause, 1sec downloading, 5 sec pause. (Or whatever depending on line speed) The graphs on the software show it nicely throttled because they take (data d/l in last 10 sec)/10.

I'm looking for something that will continously download at a limited rate instead of achieving the throttling by bursting&pause the downloads like the mentioned apps do.

This should give you plenty of general browsing speed
It does yes, if it happens to be in the "pause phase".

If I leave something running flat out or happen to hit a "download phase" then the line is blocked 100%. Not even DNS resolves reliably. So browsing is a patchy experience even when using a throttle.

Use GetRight, I have never experienced it doing what you are describing. "Compromised" versions are also available ;)
Just tested the trial version. Same thing.

If you set it to 5KB & watch the modem lights you'll see that for the most part there is zero activity thenshort burst of activity. Repeats over & over.
