The part of non-smoker might throw off a lot of network technicians.
I am currently in uni, friends with a lot of network techs, near all of them smoke.

Thanks for the feedback!

Unfortunately it's a company policy and not something we will not (edited) be lenient on.

All our staff are very competent and get by just fine without the need to smoke :)

I'm sure there is a diamond in the rough out there (not to say smoking network techies are rough) - let's hope we find one!

Why don't you just allow smokers and tell them they are only allowed to smoke outside?
There shouldn't be an issue with that, it's not like they are going to light one up in the server room.
Or are you worried about time being wasted?

Interesting - discrimination against smokers. I'm not sure how legal that would be.

Time wasted and staff health. There will also be moments when they will interact with clients face-to-face, and it's not a pretty smell to expose a client to (no offence).

I'm pretty sure there are zero legal implications. It's a company preference. If I don't want to hire someone who lives in the Northern Suburbs because they're far away from my clients, am I being indiscriminate towards people living in the Northern Suburbs?

I understand your point and appreciate the concern though. If anyone has valid legal advice on this matter, it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm with simpletech on this one, smelling like smoke will put me off as a client end of story, why should the company risk it.
