Networked music playback

Thanks!

That is a pity about the resolution. It probably means I will have to buy an HTPC next year - sadly, although they are the most expensive, they are also just the best in terms of features, support and stability. But the DroidTV box will do for now.

1080p interface coming with no loss in performance according to Matricom

Be patient :D

I'll wait! If I did buy an HTPC, it would be next year at the earliest, after AMD's Kaveri chip comes out. But yeah, if they release a 1080p interface and it is stable without overheating, then there would not be a massive need for an HTPC.

The other reason I like the DroidTV/GBox Midnight is that it has optical audio out. My old HTIB system that will do downstairs duty has no HDMI input, only RCA and optical. So, if I wanted to use some kind of android box to play music downstairs (headlessly, so no screen), I'd need something to extract audio from HDMI. DroidTV makes that much simpler.

hmmm, might have mislead you regarding 1080p, looks like only XBMC is limited to 720p for now

From the Matricom forum

"Actually, it is advertised to decode 1080p in XBMC, which it certainly does and is a feat all by itself. If you're using any video player besides XBMC, the output is already at full 1080p (as long as your box is set to 1080p resolution in settings). XBMC is dependent on the user interface scaling. As it is now, the UI is scaled to 1080p from the fb (720), This is the only reason XBMC is forced to playback at 720. This is all about to change and is huge news because we are going to be the first to achieve 1080p output with true HD decoding inside of XBMC on this platform. The 1080p will likely be an OTA update. It's very close to being completed."

Hmm I did find something like this about a year ago... can't for the life of me remember the name.

What about PLEX though that does multiple streaming?

I don't personally use Plex but tested it for someone in another thread and it worked fine on the MX.

This might also help.

Apparently XBMC on linux is generally better supported than XBMC on Android.

An update.

I got my DroidTV MX with the GBox Midnight MX2 firmware on it. Works fine out the box, XBMC works although I havent figured out filesharing yet. That is, how to share files shared on a windows share with my Android PC. I'll get to that.

As for synchronized music playback, its working! I installed XSqueeze on the Android box, but Squeezelite is not Android compatible. So, it can function in controller only mode - no local playback. However, there is an app in the store that is an LMS player, which I paid for (R50) and downloaded. It works! This is a much cheaper way to get synchronized music playback to work.

With one caveat, which is that I dont have a DHCP server on my network - I didnt think about it. So, my Android box and my PC are connected to the same wireless network, but I had to manually specify the PC's IP address when configuring the Android box. Come to think of it, this would affect filesharing too. Anyway, what I might do is go into my router's configuration page and reserve an IP address for my PC so that it doesnt change.

Awesome stuff

To access content on your server, add a video or audio source, select Samba and then browse the network for your server and share. If your share (folder) is password protected, XBMC will prompt you to enter the details. I've always struggled to add samba shares with anything other than the confluence skin; ace and aeon don't bring up the user credential window so add your shares first using confluence and then switch over to your other skin once done

Yeah I got that part to work. Its a windows machine, but for some reason, specifying the name did not work, I had to use the IP address. I assumed that the router would be running some kind of DHCP server - file sharing by name works in Windows just fine.

Cool

ps - What phone do you have, and have you installed the XBMC remote app yet?

If on Android, yatse is awesome + there's a remote control app for controlling the MX unit. Mail avsupport if you can't find it and they'll send you the client and server

I've got a Samsung Galaxy S4 - stock firmware, not rooted. Havent seen the point of either to be honest.

No, I havent done much with it (the MX) because I am waiting for my Telkom line to be installed. For some reason, I'm being lazy in terms of doing anything else until that is done! I'll have a look at though, thanks.

Galaxy 4, very cool, have a play with screen mirroring then :)

And the XBMC remote is awesome if you want to change songs, movies, etc with your phone. Then again you probably use the squeeze remote app for that
