Probably simple authentication hassles. I would create a local user on the desktop to match the user on the laptop and ensure the passwords are the same. That way, it authenticates using the local account's details when accessing the laptop. There are many ways to do this, but it can be tricky if you don't want to fiddle on the laptop. If you don't want to fiddle with user names and passwords on the desktop, then create a share on the laptop and access it by creating the following batch file (create it using notepad and save it as capture.bat - remember to change file type from text to all file types before saving):

net use x: \\laptop_name_or_ip_address\share_name /user:laptop_user_name

Save it somewhere like the desktop and substitute x for your preferred drive letter. Double click it to connect the drive letter to the laptop share. You should be asked for a password.

If it is an XP machine then set a restore point manually before you start changing settings. Once you have done that you can always return to the restore point. Just don't do any other work, like installing programs etc. after setting the restore point because they will also be 'gone' after restoring. AT least it will allow you to find the settings which make it work on your home network. Presumably Vista would have a similar facility.
