Hi there
I have two machine running vista and its connected via lan cable.I shared all the drives on both machines and I can see it in network places, but when I click on c drive it tells me i dont have permission but the public folder is accessable. Now if I use the other pc all the drives are there but c drive I dont have permision. The d drive I can acces but I cant copy or paste to that drive.

Pleas help

Share the C: drive

On the other pc, open Computer, click start>computer.

Press alt on your keyboard and click tools>map network drive> check the options and browse for the drive> map it and it should access ;)

Okay, do you have password protected sharing activated?

Do this: click your connection in the taskbar> click network and sharing center>

Turn password protected sharing off

I have similar problems.. one folder that always works is the Public folder if you set it to be shared through the network and sharing centre.

But folders on my D Drive I can't share, with the same problem. The normal way of sharing in Vista doesn't work, and neither do the "Advanced" option. So, funnily enough, I can't actually share folders in Vista. They show up but with the permission error or you can open then but not actually copy anything.

You sure you have the permissions set properly? If you dont use password protection, you can just add the group called Everyone, and give it the access you need. Sharing drives is harder than sharing folders in vista, because sharing drives, it gives you a nice gui that handles security and network permissions. Its the same as most of the older NTFS systems really, you need to make sure that the group Everyone is in both the sharing permissions and the security permissions.

*edit* usually when you can see the folder, but not access it, its because the permissions havent been set properly in the security tab of the properties window of the drive/folder.

Hope that solves your problems, otherwise give me a shout

It will probably work, I can't test it right now though, but I haven't tried that before.

So everyone who wants to share something in Vista is supposed to know this  It's not in the Help or anything, you go through the normal sharing process and it just doesn't work.

You didn't need to do anything like this in XP, you just share a folder and obviously you've shared it so that people can access it, why bother having to set permission afterwards?

ill give it a try 2morrow......not in the mood now...thanks guys.I will let you know if it works

As far as I understand it, it was added like that to increase security. When you consider that the average user could full share a potentially important drive, its not great.

As far as adding it normally, I can't help there much. I turned off password protected sharing, and then whenever I added a group to the sharing wizard, it worked fine for me. I did notice that the few times when it didnt work, I wasnt actually clicking the add button next to the group, but that is my own dumb fault ;)

Anyway send me a PM if you want me to try step you through it overdoze
