I have moved and cant run cable around my new flat(GF rules)..

I need to setup wireless nework to connect xbox and surround sound to pc in office

I have a billion 7202g Wireless router.. what else should i be buying to set this up. ?

is 54mb wireless fast enough to stream to a xbox ?

Real world speeds for wireless is around 18-20mB/s (if you have LOS)not fast enough for streaming anything other than music.
I suggest you get some pants and tell the gf that the wires are going up.

You should be getting a new GF, I reckon. Or tell her that the cable won't be the only thing not getting a laying if she makes rules like that.

:D

54mbps running at even half the expected rate is still 2MB/s transfer which is fine for non-HD media

Ethernet over Power is also an option dependant on the electrical setup :)

Not really, even normal divx (avi) files can't stream properly via wireless, even with los.

This would be packet loss/degradation related, nothing to do with throughput as you mentioned. And honestly if you have such major losses with LoS within a small area ( apartment/house ) you should consider new hardware less susceptible to interference or changing wireless channels/authentication settings to lower response times to packet-requests

*Edit Streaming a Avi file from one of our remote branches' server wireless links to my desk atm

Has anyone used those power-socket networking items? You know the ones that use the homes power lines for networking. Curious as to how they perform.

bugger because its a flat there is no ceiling to run the cables in. Gonna have to look at running cable.. but the flat is old so there are already a couple of cables running on the skirting...

Got a set of Dlink 10mbps EoP devices, throughput was pretty good ( close to maximum ) over quite an old power setup

If you can get good signal you can easily run media and movies off wireless.

In my other small flat i ran a simple wirless network off a billion router and had good signal and stream hd movies just fine.

Router 's would be 13m's apart throught 2 wall's place build in 1960 so walls pretty thick...
need to maybe look in the EoP devices.

I tried them, but they sucked at my place... the wireless was better.

BTW, put my AP in my ceiling (senoa 200mw) right about dead center of my house (did a little POE mod for it). I can stream DVD images to my mVix with it.

Are you guys using n wireless ? look's like n wireless router are about 700 bucks each will probally be better than the poe...

Is this a wood skirting?

If it is then you can run the cables underneath the skirting (between floor/carpet & skirting) and they are out of sight. Done this many times myself.

Oh, and remove those old unsightly cables while you are at it, should get you extra points with the GF.

I'm currently running a Dlink DIR 615 Wireless Router with a Dlink N-wireless to my media centre.

Getting about 80-90mbits through it. Streaming 1080p material to my Media centre PC.

It goes about 15m and goes throught 2 brick walls, one 2 bricks deep and another 4 bricks deep.

I could not even do 720p on my old 54mb wireless.

I find the peformance and "feel" of it to be very like 100mbit lan cable.

Which network card you got ?

I hear the dir-615 doesnt like to work in pairs.. have they got client mode?
