Hey,

Firstly just want to apologize if this is not posted in the correct forum section.

I would like to study "Networking" next year and usually start to apply around April...
I would just like to ask a few questions.

Where did you study? - I am having trouble finding universities that are offering a networking course or integrated into a degree. I live in Cape Town and I am sure that I would not be able to go to any other universities that aren't in the surrounding area,in other words like WITS.

UWC (The University of the Western Cape) is the only university that I have found so far that has networking and on my third year I do CISCO. http://horizon.cs.uwc.ac.za/Home/default.asp

I also found that CTI has a networking course although I saw on the forums that CTI received a vast amount of criticism. http://www.cti.co.za/qualifications/it-faculty/information-systems-network-engineering.html

Any universities I might have overlooked? Please let me know what you think of UWC and what you will recommend.

Thank you!

4 or 5 South African universities offer "Communication Networks" diploma. WSU, UKZN, NMMU and another. You might want to look at that if you don't mind moving from Cape Town. I'd also not advise the CTI route, rather do the certifications over it (whether in a bundle or individually), which should be around R1500 per certificate, resulting in, if you do 6 you'd only pay R9000, through self-study, instead of R90000, you'd pay in CTI for basically the same thing. So, say, which part/side of networking are you inclined in?

Thing is if you do the CCNA in first year of university and certify by the time you finish university your certification would have lapsed and you would have pretty much forgotten what they taught you.

Instead of worrying about CCNA why don't you rather concentrated on courses that give you a solid foundation in data communications. Rather go do a B.Eng. or B.Sc degree with specialisation towards communication. That would be way more useful to your future and career opportunities. Afterwards you can go do what ever certifications you want.

Something like http://web.uct.ac.za/depts/commnetwork/eee4002/ teaches you way more than a CCNA ever can.

Thank you for the advice guys. I am really looking for a course that is just about networking, I guess one cannot get a degree for networking? I would love to study and get a bunch of diplomas but are they really worth more than a degree?

No local degrees offer such limited scope in specific fields. It's not the purpose of a degree.

There are international establishments that do (dodgy ones, more like a community college thing in the states) but I can guarantee you that you will not get local accreditation for it so it's almost worthless.

Years back I actually saw a Masters program from a well know US or Canadian university that looked very good but it still had a prerequisite of a B.Sc or B.Eng for admittance as well as work expereince.
